About The Position

The Music Center seeks passionate, experienced Teaching Artists in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, media arts or multidisciplinary arts to join our team. Teaching Artists work with preK-12 students, educators and community members across Los Angeles County through in-school and out-of-school programs, integrating high-quality arts instruction with curriculum standards and community engagement. Teaching artists may be required to participate in Planning or Continuing Education sessions, which are usually conducted at the Music Center’s offices. Planning and Continuing Education sessions may consist of artist training sessions led by leaders in the arts and education field and/or Music Center artists and staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience teaching in schools or community settings as a professional teaching artist.
  • Strong classroom management and culturally responsive teaching skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and fellow artists.
  • Deep knowledge of your artistic discipline and a commitment to youth development through the arts.
  • Availability during school hours (typically 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. on weekdays).
  • Reliable transportation to travel throughout Los Angeles County and punctual to start work on time.
  • Be able to pass a background check and a TB test.
  • Be able to supply a social security number, Tax ID or proof of authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging, inclusive arts education experiences for students, educators, and community members. Lesson plans should reflect and incorporate the CA Arts Standards and Common Core Standards.
  • Collaborate with Music Center staff and classroom teachers to align lesson plans with educational standards and cultural relevance.
  • Lead workshops, residencies, or family/community events as assigned.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Maintain reliable communication, documentation, and reporting of programs and outcomes.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge, understanding and passion for their art form.
  • Know how to collaborate with classroom teachers in working toward shared learning outcomes.
  • Receive constructive feedback to strengthen their teaching skills.
