About The Position

This position involves working within a correctional setting to provide instruction to an adult incarcerated population. The role requires teaching academic classes in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies, differentiating instruction for diverse learners, and utilizing research-based practices. Collaboration with Education Division and Institutional Administration staff is essential for effective instruction delivery in a secure environment. The teacher will be responsible for student attendance, performance ratings, case plan updates, and documentation for earned good time. Mandatory training and maintaining a valid teaching license are required. The role also includes administering standardized tests, managing student education files, and reviewing educational program waitlists. A comprehensive knowledge of DOC policies and procedures, support for Education Division priorities, and professional interaction with staff and incarcerated individuals are expected. Classroom behavior management and prompt reporting of security-related matters are also key responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Possession of appropriate Teacher's Certificate issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • No felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609.
  • Shall not have engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997.
  • Shall not have been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph.
  • The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with incarcerated individuals or residents.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Work within a correctional setting to provide instruction to an adult incarcerated population with various medical, psychosocial, and/or educational deficits.
  • Teach academic classes to multi-leveled students as assigned by supervisor in the subject areas of: Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
  • Differentiate instruction for low-level or English Second Language learners.
  • Utilize research-based practices, current instructional methods, and subject-based curriculum to ensure effective instruction.
  • Work with Education Division and Institutional Administration staff to ensure success in the delivery of effective instruction in a secure setting.
  • Complete student attendance daily and student performance ratings monthly; update student case plans; and provide documentation as required by Division and Department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide documentation as need for statutory earned good time (EGT) and academic boosts.
  • Complete mandatory 40 hours of state and departmental training within the fiscal year as well as maintain a current and valid teaching license. Provide documentation of training and licensure.
  • Administer standardized testing as requested via paper or tablet including TABE, TABE CLAS-E, HiSET, and HiSET qualifying exams.
  • Maintain and assist in the processing of student education files and provide updated student academic documentation as needed.
  • Maintain and review educational program waitlists as needed to ensure full class capacity.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and practice of DOC policies and procedures.
  • Support Education Division priorities and contribute to enhance implementation of strategic goals by collaborating with academic professionals, inside and outside the Division.
  • Interact and communicate with staff and incarcerated individuals in a professional manner with appropriate respect and boundaries.
  • Manage classroom behaviors and expectations in alignment with institutional rules and regulations.
  • Report all security related matters to supervisors promptly.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
