About The Position

This position reports to a Correctional Programs Supervisor at a minimum custody male correctional facility and works in the Programs Department carrying a caseload of offenders. The role involves providing supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, addressing offender questions and concerns, and making recommendations to the classifications committee. It requires effective communication with staff, offenders, and the public, and the ability to work under stressful conditions due to direct contact with incarcerated offenders who may exhibit violent or abusive behavior. The position also involves performing crisis interventions, including suicide prevention, assisting in or coordinating offender rehabilitation programs (e.g., work assignments, work release, education, recreation, transition planning), and preparing written reports based on reviewed data, interviews, documentation, and observations.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; OR High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Providing supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following-up on offenders’ questions and concerns as well as making recommendations to the classifications committee.
  • Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders and the general public and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
  • Performing crisis interventions to include suicide prevention.
  • Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, work release, education or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordinating.
  • Preparing written reports with accurately reflect date reviewed by various sources, reviewing, analyzing and evaluating various documents and behavior data gathered form interviews, written documentation and personal observation.
