About The Position

Reporting to the HCS Principal, the HCS Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality education to students in Kindergarten to Grade 7 within the Haisla Community School. This includes providing engaging instruction in various subjects using different teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles; supporting the holistic development of students by merging traditional lessons with modern education plans; and assessing students and providing constructive feedback. The HCS Teacher will work closely with community members, parents, and other educators to create a culturally responsive, supportive and inclusive learning environment for the students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field.
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum 1 to 3 years of teaching experience.
  • Commitment to high standards of professionalism and academic excellence.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and patient with a strong commitment to supporting the well-being of students.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working teaching, sharing, and learning Indigenous knowledge to and from students is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that align with provincial curriculum standards and incorporate Indigenous knowledge, activities and traditions by working closely with Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community members.
  • Deliver high-quality, engaging instruction by utilizing a variety of teaching strategies and resources to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Foster a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Monitor and assess student progress using different assessment tools and techniques and provide written student evaluation reports.
  • Collaborate with Education Assistants and Culture & Language Teachers as required.
  • Collaborate with parents, guardians, and other professionals to create and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with parents about student progress, schedules, assignments, concerns, and achievements; set up and attend parent-teacher conferences.
  • Participate in staff and professional meetings, teacher training workshops, and educational conferences to stay current with educational best practices and culturally responsive teaching methods.
  • Participate in community meetings, events, and activities to stay informed and engaged with the community.
