About The Position

Instructors for the Verizon Program have primary responsibility for implementing the curriculum. This role involves providing instruction in developing writing skills, critical thinking, coding, and robotics. The position requires weekday and evening responsibilities, including tutoring and mentoring high school students during evening study sessions. The instructor will administer and score pre- and post-tests, introduce students to university-level writing expectations, and enhance their proficiency in using technology for academic purposes. Additionally, the role involves guiding students in research using the library and internet, implementing pre-college teaching strategies, and adhering to the discipline policies of the Verizon project. A key aspect of the role is motivating students towards careers in math or science by serving as a positive role model and integrating information about African American contributions into the curriculum. Maintaining a safe and healthy classroom environment, adhering to Verizon policies, and reporting student issues promptly are also crucial. The instructor will manage student records, including scores and test materials, ensuring confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English or Engineering.
  • Ability to supervise high school students.
  • Ability to provide instruction in developing writing skills, critical thinking, coding, and robotics.
  • Willingness to work weekday and evening responsibilities.
  • Ability to tutor/mentor students at evening study sessions.
  • Ability to administer and score pre- and post-tests.
  • Ability to introduce students to university-level writing.
  • Ability to increase student proficiency in using technology/computer applications for writing.

  • Ability to follow the SOAR methodology and incorporate pre-college teaching strategies and cooperative learning techniques.
