About The Position

Instructors for the Verizon Program have primary responsibility for implementing the curriculum. This role involves providing instruction in developing writing skills, critical thinking, coding, and robotics. The position will include weekday and evening responsibilities. The instructor will provide instruction to and supervision of high school students, including tutoring/mentoring at evening study sessions, administering and scoring pre- and post-tests, introducing students to university-level writing, increasing proficiency in technology for writing and research, and following the SOAR methodology with pre-college teaching strategies and cooperative learning techniques. The instructor will also adhere to the discipline policies of the Verizon project and conduct themselves in a professional manner. Additionally, the role involves motivating students to pursue careers in math or science by being a role model and infusing knowledge of African Americans' contributions to society into the curriculum. Maintaining a safe and healthy classroom environment by adhering to Verizon policies, reporting student issues promptly, and maintaining student records and confidentiality are also key responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English
  • Ability to provide instruction and supervision of high school students.
  • Proficiency in tutoring/mentoring.
  • Experience in administering and scoring tests.
  • Knowledge of university-level writing expectations.
  • Proficiency in using technology/computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word) for writing.
  • Skills in using the library and Internet for research.
  • Familiarity with the SOAR methodology.
  • Knowledge of pre-college teaching strategies and cooperative learning techniques.
  • Adherence to discipline policies.
  • Professional conduct.
  • Ability to motivate students towards STEM careers.
  • Knowledge of African Americans' contributions to society.
  • Understanding of classroom safety policies.
  • Ability to maintain student records and confidentiality.
