About The Position

Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB) is expanding its Children's Learning Center to two new locations in Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island. These facilities will serve preschool children who are blind or have low vision, as well as those with multiple disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or pervasive developmental delays. The Special Education Teacher will conduct a special education preschool classroom for children with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This role requires maintaining positive communication with parents, other staff members, and external professionals, demonstrating a commitment to HKSB's Mission and Values, and upholding a high professional standard.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in special education as a Teacher of The Visually Impaired or as a Special Education Teacher from an accredited Teacher Preparation program.
  • Minimum 1-2 years teaching experience in a special education setting.
  • Valid New York State Teachers License as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired or as a Special Education Teacher.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and school-related applications, including Class Dojo and student information systems.

  • Experience with children with disabilities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to School Principal.
  • Completes required pre-service trainings (5-hour Health and Safety, 2-hour Mandated Reporter) within the first six months of employment.
  • Completes a total of 15 hours of approved training within the first six months of employment and 15 hours annually thereafter.
  • Utilizes diverse and engaging curriculums to maximize students’ learning opportunities and promote active participation.
  • Develops and implements a whole child learning approach with specific adaptations in collaboration with therapists.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with families to ensure carryover strategies from school to home.
  • Acts as the primary contact between home and school, liaising with the school social worker as needed.
  • Accurately monitors and records progress toward IEP goals and provides direction to staff for data collection.
  • Continuously evaluates student progress and documents it in report cards, progress notes, and annual updates.
  • Submits weekly lesson plans, student goal data, and newsletters to the Principal.
  • Maintains accurate attendance documents and submits them to the administrative assistant.
  • Advocates for the educational and developmental needs of students.
  • Attends all student IEP meetings.
  • Develops and maintains strong rapport with school district representatives.
  • Participates in teacher and team meetings and completes assigned tasks.
  • Actively participates in school-wide functions.
  • Seeks out and participates in professional development activities.
  • Plans, assigns, and monitors instructional assistant responsibilities and schedules.
  • Prepares and delivers annual reviews for classroom teaching assistants.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning work, appraising performance, rewarding/disciplining employees, and resolving problems.
