Job SummaryThe PSR Teacher provides faith formation for children or youth enrolled in the parish religious education program. The teacher helps students grow in their understanding of Catholic teachings, Scripture, and traditions, while fostering a personal relationship with God and active participation in the Church.

Requirements

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing (preferred or required depending on parish/diocese)
  • Basic knowledge of Catholic teachings and traditions
  • Experience working with children or youth (teaching, tutoring, or volunteering)
  • Willingness to complete diocesan catechist certification and safe environment training
  • All candidates receiving an employment offer must submit a pre-employment screening. The screening will include criminal background check, Family Care Safety Registration, drug screen, employment and educational licensure/certification verification, health screening, and any other screenings deemed necessary for employment. Any offer would be contingent upon successful completion of any required screening.

Responsibilities

  • Teach weekly religion classes to assigned grade level (e.g., K–8 or high school)
  • Prepare lesson plans using the parish-approved curriculum and materials
  • Present Catholic teachings, Scripture, sacraments, and moral values in age-appropriate ways
  • Foster a respectful, welcoming, and faith-centered classroom environment
  • Lead students in prayer and model Christian behavior
  • Prepare students for sacraments as needed (e.g., First Reconciliation, First Communion, Confirmation)
  • Track attendance and communicate student progress or concerns to the DRE and parents
  • Maintain a safe environment in compliance with diocesan child protection policies
  • Participate in catechist meetings, training sessions, and parish events
