About The Position

This role involves exercising general professional duties as a teacher in a school, under the reasonable direction of the principal. The teacher will plan and prepare courses and lessons, teach assigned pupils, and assess, record, and report on their development, progress, and attainment. Key responsibilities include promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, communicating with parents, and participating in relevant meetings. The role also entails contributing to staff development, maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding pupils' health and safety, preparing pupils for public examinations, and participating in administrative and organizational tasks. Teachers are expected to be available for 195 days a year, with no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching. The annual working hours are 1,265, exclusive of time spent off-site for preparation and travel. Weekly teaching hours are capped at 25 for primary schools. The job description is subject to review and may include other similar duties. The post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and comply with equality legislation.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of 1 year's demonstrable experience in a paid capacity of teaching Primary 6 and/or 7 at Key Stage 2 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience of monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting and intervention.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching children with Special Educational Needs using interventions and strategies to support their learning.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems and be flexible.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrable experience of coordinating an area of learning at a whole school level in particular Maths and Numeracy, Physical Education, UICT, PDMU or The Arts.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience in a paid capacity of teaching P6 and/or 7 at Key Stage 2 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading or facilitating any of the following: School Residential Trip, a School Production, whole school extra-curricular programmes or School Council.
  • Demonstrable experience of promoting the school within its community and beyond via the School website and/or social media channels.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach assigned pupils, setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupil development, progress, and attainment.

  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education, and future careers.
  • Make records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.

  • Communicate and co-operate with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for the purposes described above.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to pupils.

  • Review teaching methods and programmes of work.
  • Participate in further training and professional development.
  • Advise and co-operate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils.
  • Safeguard pupils' health and safety.
  • Participate in school meetings related to curriculum, administration, organization, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them.
  • Record and report on assessments for public examinations.
  • Participate in arrangements for pupils' presentation for and supervision during public examinations.
  • Contribute to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Co-ordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Take part in the review, development, and management of curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions of the school.
  • Participate in administrative and organizational tasks, including managing support staff and ordering/allocating equipment.
  • Attend assemblies.
  • Register pupil attendance and supervise pupils.
  • Supervise and teach pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions regarding cover.
  • Promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and pay due regard for equality legislation.
