About The Position

This role involves exercising general and particular professional duties as a teacher in a school, under the reasonable direction of the Principal. Key responsibilities include planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching pupils according to their educational needs, and assessing, recording, and reporting on their development, progress, and attainment. The role also requires promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, communicating with parents, and participating in meetings related to pupil development and school organization. Teachers are expected to maintain good order and discipline, safeguard the health and safety of pupils, and participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations. Additionally, the role may involve contributing to staff development, reviewing teaching methods, and participating in administrative and organizational tasks. Teachers are expected to be available for 195 days a year, with no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching, and to perform duties for 1,265 hours annually, exclusive of time spent off-site for preparation and travel. Specific teaching hours per week are capped at 25 for primary/special schools and 23.5 for secondary schools. The post-holder must also promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and comply with equality legislation.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach Mathematics (as their main subject) in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Mathematics as his/her main subject.
  • Minimum of six months demonstrable experience of teaching Mathematics at Key Stage 3 and / or Key Stage 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
  • Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.

Responsibilities

  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them for these purposes.
  • Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
  • Reviewing, developing, and managing activities related to the school's curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions.
  • Participating in administrative and organizational tasks, including managing support staff and ordering equipment.
  • Attending assemblies.
  • Registering pupil attendance and supervising pupils.
  • Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions regarding school size and duration of absence.
