About The Position

The Teacher of English will be responsible for the effective delivery of English programmes of study across all bands at Key Stage 3. This role involves teaching English, small groups for targeted support, and potentially LLW, Drama, or other subjects as required. The position also entails assisting in the implementation of all school policies and the pastoral programme, ensuring high standards of pupil achievement, and developing resources to enhance pupil experience. The teacher will be expected to utilize ICT, collaborate within the department, and potentially assist with school drama productions.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree (2:1 or above) which has prepared the applicant to teach English/English Literature as his/her main subject.
  • If degree is English-related, demonstrate that specific module choices prepare for teaching English.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching English at Key Stage 3 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Evidence of experience or appropriate qualifications that would enable the successful candidate to contribute to the teaching of another curricular area at Key Stage 3.
  • Demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom approaches to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrate through qualifications or experience the ability to contribute and enhance at least one of the following: mid-week extra curricular / co-curricular programmes or Saturday games programme.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the English curriculum at KS3.
  • Demonstrable Knowledge and understanding of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of approaches to assessment in order to promote effective teaching and student progress, including baselining.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of developments in the teaching of English and Literacy.
  • Demonstrable ability to provide a supportive and challenging learning environment, including using assessment to promote effective teaching and progress.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to seek and avail of opportunities to increase his/her own professional competence as a teacher.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, by using initiative, taking a creative approach to problem solving.
  • Practice good time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Teach English across all bands at key stage 3 in the school.
  • Teach small groups for targeted English support.
  • Teach LLW, Drama or other subjects as required.
  • Ensure effective delivery of the relevant programmes of study within the School in accordance with School Policies and in pursuit of high standards of pupil achievement.
  • Assist in the implementation of all of the School policies and the School’s Pastoral programme.
  • Monitor, evaluate and review pupil learning programmes and their delivery to ensure effectiveness and report outcomes.
  • Develop self to enhance performance and thus pupil outcomes through INSET and PRSD programmes.
  • Secure, monitor, develop and produce resources allocated to ensure equality and effectiveness of pupil experience.
  • Develop use of ICT to enhance learning, including active use of G Suite.
  • Work as an enthusiastic member of the department, attend department meetings, and contribute to department planning.
  • Willingness to volunteer to assist with school drama production.
  • Carry out duties as detailed in the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Service) Regulations (NI) 1987.
  • Carry out all duties in a manner that complies with current Health and Safety legislation, the requirements of the Children’s Order, the School’s security requirements, the requirements of Killicomaine's Policy Documents, and the requirements of the Education Authority and the Department of Education.
  • Act as a Form Teacher/Tutor to an assigned Form/Tutor group and carry out related duties.
  • Carry out a share of pupil supervisory duties in accordance with published rosters.
  • Participate in appropriate meetings with colleagues, parents and pupils.
  • Implement all School Policies and procedures.
  • Play an active part in promoting the School’s motto Servire Honore and ethos “Working together for excellence in a caring community.”
  • Undertake any reasonable duties as requested by the Principal or his appointed Deputy.
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking of work.
  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers.
  • Make records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicate and consult with the parents of pupils.
  • Communicate and co-operate with external bodies as approved.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for the purposes described above.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.
  • Participate in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
  • Review methods of teaching and programmes of work.
  • Participate in arrangements for further training and professional development.
  • Advise and co-operate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health and safety.
  • Participate in meetings relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations.
  • Contribute to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers.
  • Co-ordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Contribute to the review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.
  • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to duties, including the management or supervision of support staff and the ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies.
  • Register the attendance of pupils and supervise pupils.
  • Supervise and teach any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions regarding cover.
