About The Position

The Moses Lake School District is seeking applications for K-5 District Multilingual Specialists. The district Multilingual Specialist will instruct students in English language development, and work directly with the building Multilingual Team to provide evidence-based English language development instruction. The ideal candidate, first and foremost, is a student liaison that works to ensure equity; has experiences reflecting knowledge and expertise in using and promoting evidence-based English language strategies; exhibits superior organizational communication skills (verbal and writing); is compassionate; is willing to collaborate; and is knowledgeable about recent research in pedagogy in the field of second language acquisition and EL education. Additionally, the candidate should possess sensitivity to the developmental stages and well being of children and have a willingness to be flexible in terms of teaching assignment within the high school setting.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State Teacher certificate and English Language Learner endorsement; or course work that meets WAC requirements or demonstrated commitment to obtaining required endorsement.
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of language acquisition.
  • Experience, knowledge, and skill working with English Language Development standards.
  • Deep level of understanding in evidence-based strategies, progress monitoring, and assessments for English Language Development.
  • Understand assessment results and use results to drive instruction that demonstrates and proves high levels of student growth and development specifically in the area of English language development.
  • Track record of being a flexible team player, student focused, and community minded.

  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish desired, but not required.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Teach multiple classes and language levels to meet the needs of Multilingual students at Moses Lake High School.
  • Screen Multilingual Learners according to district, state and federal laws and policies.
  • Frequently progress monitor, analyze data, and utilize results to drive instructional goals and objectives for individual students.
  • Advocating best practices in ELD and program growth resulting in transitional bilingual and dual language student opportunities.
  • Collaboratively develop, implement, and articulate written plans of action regarding English language development curricula aligned to WIDA ELD standards.
  • Collaborate with counselors, building leadership and district multilingual support staff to evaluate programming and determine the best placement for Multilingual students at Moses Lake High School.
  • Provide stakeholders with a student profile that contains language level proficiency, probable supports needed within the classroom, progress monitoring updates, and assessment scores in order to advocate for multilingual students.
  • Employ a variety of language acquisition instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including whole group (co-teaching)/small-group or individual learning.
  • Provide instructional planning, guidance and appropriate materials to paraeducators working within the program.
  • Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program. This includes, but is not limited to quarterly progress reports.
  • Engage parents and families in their student's learning and act as an ambassador for the school in the community.
  • Protect and honor building scheduled ELD time for multilingual learners.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Work cooperatively with district and building staff and students.
  • Attend IEP, Section 504, and other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and state law.
  • Serve on the building RTI/MTSS team as a Multilingual Learner liaison.
  • Attend district multilingual support specialist PLC meetings, professional development, and meetings as assigned.
  • Responsible for tracking and monitoring for Native American and Migrant students, including those who don’t necessarily qualify for multilingual services.
  • Work collaboratively with the District Teaching and Learning Department and District Federal Program Assistant.
