About The Position

This role is for a Teacher - Head of Sixth Form within a Special Educational Needs school. The position requires the successful candidate to exercise general professional duties as directed by the Principal and to perform particular duties as assigned. This includes planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching assigned pupils according to their educational needs, and assessing, recording, and reporting on pupil development. The role also involves promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance, communicating with parents and external bodies, and participating in meetings. Specific duties include contributing to oral and written assessments, participating in staff development and performance reviews, reviewing teaching methods, and co-operating with colleagues on curriculum development. The teacher is responsible for maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety, and participating in school administration and organization. This includes contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers, coordinating the work of other teachers, and managing curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions. Administrative tasks include managing support staff and allocating resources. The role also involves preparing pupils for public examinations and supervising them during these assessments. Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing positive relationships for learning with children and young people.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with a range of professionals to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of and/or continuing professional development in the use of specialist equipment, facilities or skills to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and its implications.
  • Current working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to effectively meet the learning needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current assessment methods used with children and young people who have Special Educational Needs in order to diagnose, plan for learning and measure progress.
  • Knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning eg. Restorative Practice.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems and be flexible.
  • Ability to seek and avail of opportunities to increase his/her own professional competence as a teacher.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
  • Ability to analyse and present data to a wide range of audiences.
  • Willingness to be a member of the School Senior Management Team.
  • Hold a relevant qualification to assist with the delivery of English/Maths at Level 1 (GCSE D-G) in a school environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of writing Individual Education Plans.
  • Demonstrable experience of the Annual Review process.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom approaches to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.
  • Have studied SEN as a subsidiary subject or as an area of specialism as part of teacher training.
  • Be willing to complete Team Teaching certification.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise general professional duties as circumstances require, under the reasonable direction of the Principal.
  • Perform particular duties as reasonably assigned by the Principal.
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record, and report on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and assigned classes/groups.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education, and future careers.
  • Make records and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicate and consult with the parents of pupils.
  • Communicate and co-operate with external bodies as approved.
  • Participate in meetings related to pupil progress, well-being, and school organization.
  • Provide oral and written assessments, reports, and references for pupils.
  • Participate in staff development and performance review schemes.
  • Review teaching methods and programmes of work.
  • Participate in further training and professional development.
  • Advise and co-operate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils.
  • Safeguard the health and safety of pupils.
  • Participate in meetings related to the school curriculum, administration, organization, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Prepare pupils for public examinations and assess them for examination purposes.
  • Contribute to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Contribute to the review, development, and management of curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions.
  • Participate in administrative and organizational tasks, including managing support staff and ordering/allocating equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies and register pupil attendance.
  • Supervise pupils before, during, and after school sessions.
  • Supervise and teach any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions.
  • Coordinate travel training, breakfast club, EMA, and work experience.
  • Devise schemes of work and related resources.
  • Coordinate delivery, testing, submission, and moderation of Key Stage 5 Assessments.
  • Organize and manage Life Skills Programme for Year 13-15.
