About The Position

The teacher assistant position is to enhance the learning environment and support school and teaching staff to meet the needs of the Montessori Laboratory School.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent and working toward CDA or ECE degree
  • Solid understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices
  • General knowledge and understanding of Montessori philosophy and practice
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a similar role
  • Proof of a criminal record clearance
  • A physical examination clearance for work with children age two to six
  • A current TB screening
  • Current CPR training and First Aid certificate
  • Member of the Career Access and Navigation of Early Childhood Systems (CANOES) Registry with the qualification of Assistant for group child care centers and homes.
  • An expressed willingness to respect and support the Catholic and Marianist identity of Chaminade University of Honolulu and perform all duties in a manner consistent with the Marianist educational values and mission of the University.
  • Understanding of and respect for the University’s designation as an institution serving students of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island ancestry.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out the plans and directives of the CUMLS Administrator and the Montessori teaching staff and abide by all licensing and accreditation standards.
  • Assists with the set-up and maintenance of the Montessori prepared environment. This includes but is not limited to preparing materials and activities, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, moving furniture, and other chores necessary so that the environment is clean, aesthetically pleasing, and safe for the children.
  • Prepares snacks, refills supplies as needed, and does other tasks as required to support the classroom environment, Montessori teaching staff, and the CUMLS Administrator.
  • Supports teaching staff by redirecting children as needed to allow teachers to continue working with individual/small groups of children and/or observe as needed.
  • Work with and redirect the children in the classroom to promote their learning and development consistent with the Montessori philosophy.
  • Collaborate with the Montessori teaching staff to monitor the development of each child.
  • Participates in staff meetings as applicable and other in-service training as needed.
  • Attends all school functions as requested.
  • Participates in the planning of school events, parent nights, programs, and other functions.
  • All other duties, as required.
