About The Position

Action Pact is a community action agency dedicated to improving lives and communities for over 50 years. We are seeking a full-time Head Start Teacher Assistant to create a safe, nurturing, and positive learning environment for children. This role involves assisting the assigned teacher in planning and implementing classroom activities, duties related to children, and parent engagement, all in accordance with performance standards and program review instruments.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A preschool CDA/TCC is required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the assigned teacher in planning and implementing all duties related to the classroom, children, and parents as stated in the performance standards and on-site program review instrument.
  • Assisting in the day-to-day management of an assigned classroom, including all assigned paperwork delegated by the Center Coordinator/Lead Teacher and Teacher.
  • Conducting daily head counts and completing daily attendance records and meal counts.
  • Following an approved curriculum and daily schedule, and assisting in the development and implementation of daily lesson plans that foster cognitive functioning, social, intellectual, physical, and emotional growth, and allow for children's choices and creativity. Lesson plans must include appropriate nutrition, mental health, and dental health activities.
  • Monitoring, documenting, and following the policy for reporting suspected child abuse.
  • Observing, assessing, and recording the behavior of assigned children, ensuring records reflect assessment tools used and that program activities are planned based on ongoing assessment.
  • Assisting in the timely updating of each assigned child’s assessment to reach established educational and/or developmental goals.
  • In the absence of the Teacher, and in conjunction with specialists and appropriate staff, developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEP) for children with disabilities and Individualized Prescriptive Plans for "children at risk".
  • Assisting in compiling an inventory and requesting/storing adequate classroom materials and supplies.
  • Assisting the Teacher with home visits to parents or guardians.
  • Assisting the Teacher in coordinating the activities of volunteers.
  • Understanding, respecting, and maintaining confidential information regarding children, families, and the program.
  • Assisting in the implementation of the assigned curriculum designed to improve children's physical abilities, social/emotional development, and mental skills.
  • Assisting the Teacher in demonstrating appropriate classroom management techniques, including establishing and maintaining organization and dealing with disruptions and behavior problems.
  • Advising parents of each child's progress and/or problems, and documenting all contacts and attempted contacts with parents.
  • Being courteous and receptive to Head Start parents and encouraging their participation in their child’s development.
  • Assisting the Teacher in supervising the arrival and departure of children and loading/unloading buses.
  • Establishing, utilizing, and identifying a variety of interest areas, and organizing space, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assuring that rooms are neat and attractive, and children’s work is displayed at eye level.
  • Assuring that rooms have indicators or evidence in each child’s folder that their program of activities and experiences are planned and based on ongoing assessment.
  • Maintaining classroom records established by the appropriate Specialist in the absence of the Teacher.
  • Reporting needs for equipment repair or replacement to the Teacher.
  • Coordinating with appropriate community resources with the approval of the Center Coordinator/Lead Teacher.
  • Promoting parent and community volunteers and actively seeking In-Kind donations.
  • Responding appropriately to crisis or emergency situations.
  • Encouraging experimentation, exploration, problem-solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice-making; asking open-ended questions and listening respectfully.
  • Performing all other assigned duties.
