About The Position

Action Pact is a community action agency dedicated to improving lives and communities for over 50 years. We are seeking a full-time Head Start Teacher Assistant to create a safe, nurturing, and positive learning environment for children. This role involves assisting the assigned teacher in planning and implementing classroom activities, supporting children, and engaging with parents, all in accordance with Head Start performance standards. The position is located at Coffee Head Start, 511 Pine Street, Douglas, Ga 31533, with an estimated start date of July 28, 2026.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A preschool CDA/TCC is required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily head count and complete daily attendance records and meal count.
  • Follow an approved curriculum and daily schedule, and assist in the development and implementation of daily lesson plans that foster cognitive functioning and include developmentally appropriate activities for social, intellectual, physical, and emotional growth. Lesson plans must also include appropriate nutrition, mental health, and dental health activities.
  • Monitor, document, and follow the policy for reporting suspected child abuse.
  • Observe, assess, and record the behavior of assigned children, ensuring records reflect assessment tools used and that program activities are based on ongoing assessment. Establish and document educational and/or developmental goals for each child.
  • In the absence of the Teacher, and in conjunction with specialists and parents, develop and implement an individualized education plan (IEP) for children with disabilities and an Individualized Prescriptive Plan for "children at risk".
  • Assist in compiling an inventory and requesting/storing adequate classroom materials and supplies.
  • Assist the Teacher with home visits to parents or guardians of assigned children.
  • Assist the Teacher in coordinating the activities of volunteers.
  • Understand, respect, and maintain confidential information regarding children, families, and the program.
  • Assist in the implementation of the assigned curriculum designed to improve children's physical abilities, social/emotional development, and mental skills.
  • Assist the Teacher in demonstrating appropriate classroom management techniques, including establishing and maintaining organization and dealing with disruptions and behavior problems. The use of corporal punishment and isolation is strictly prohibited.
  • Continuously assist the Teacher in advising parents of each child's progress and/or problems, and document all contacts and attempted contacts with parents.
  • Be courteous and receptive to all Head Start parents, encouraging participation in their child's development and reinforcing positive behavior.
  • Assist the Teacher in supervising the arrival and departure of children and loading/unloading buses.
  • Assist the Lead Teacher/Teacher in establishing, utilizing, and identifying a variety of interest areas, and organizing space, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensure rooms are neat and attractive, with children's work displayed at eye level.
  • Ensure there are indicators or evidence in each child's folder that their program of activities and experiences are planned and based on ongoing assessment.
  • In the absence of the Teacher, maintain classroom records established by the appropriate Specialist.
  • Report needs for equipment repair or replacement to the Teacher.
  • Assist the Teacher, with approval, to coordinate with appropriate community resources.
  • Promote parent and community volunteers and actively seek In-Kind donations.
  • Respond appropriately to crisis or emergency situations.
  • Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem-solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice-making; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully.
  • Perform all other duties assigned.
