About The Position

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) is seeking to fill two permanent full-time Teacher Assistant positions at New Germany Rural High School. These positions involve supporting students with their academic and personal success within an inclusive and diverse educational environment. One of the positions will include bus monitor duties. The SSRCE serves approximately 59,000 residents across 23 schools in Lunenburg and Queens Counties.

Requirements

  • High school completion certificate
  • Successful completion of a minimum 2-year course of study certified by the N.S. Department of Education in a related field (e.g., education support program), with a significant Special Education component.
  • Course of study must include a supervised practicum of no less than 100 hours.
  • Bona fide occupational requirements as identified in the job posting (e.g., American Sign language, Braille).
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Specific health care support training or certification as required (e.g., Non-Violent Crisis Intervention).
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position.
  • Possess basic computer skills and have training in assistive technology.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check and Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check (within the last 3 months).

  • Willingness to accept bus monitor duties for one of the positions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides personal care functions as determined through the program planning process and under the direction of the teacher(s), including assisting students with physical and mobility challenges, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for personal care needs, assisting with routines (toileting, dressing, feeding, personal hygiene), administering medication and oral inhalant, and carrying out medical procedures when trained and authorized.
  • Supports the implementation of identified behaviour management outcomes under the direction of the teacher(s), including using appropriate physical interventions, encouraging students to respect school guidelines, modeling and encouraging respect for self and others, promoting positive interactions, and recording data and observations.
  • Works collaboratively as a member of the school community by demonstrating ethical behaviors, respecting and promoting student rights, understanding the role of a program support assistant, modeling problem-solving and conflict resolution, referring information requests to appropriate personnel, relaying student information to teachers, participating in required training, respecting privacy and confidentiality, communicating effectively, and following regional and provincial policies.
  • Develops and maintains a positive rapport with students by treating them with respect, dignity, and fairness, promoting independence and self-advocacy, respecting student strengths and challenges, maintaining effective relationships, demonstrating patience and understanding, and responding appropriately to student-initiated interactions.
  • Performs bus monitor duties as assigned for one of the positions.
