About The Position

Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school that began as an idea among community members who longed to see more educational choices offered to the children of Washington Heights and Inwood. All staff must be willing to commit to our mission: Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School will empower students in Inwood and Washington Heights to become agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development and college preparedness. Requirements

  • Enrollment in a Bachelors program with a major or minor in Education with a minimum of 60 credits is required.
  • Experience supporting teachers through coaching or directing
  • Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and needs
  • Experience and general understanding of educational administration

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in specific subject matter or education preferred
  • Some teaching or tutoring experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Teach classes on behalf of Deans and teacher-leaders who are observing other teachers
  • Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers within the school
  • Teach one class or small groups of students
  • Periodically plan and deliver instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year
  • Develop teaching skills to potentially become a full-time teacher at the school
  • Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support
  • Observe teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and classroom management
  • Meet regularly with a coach to implement feedback on lessons and instruction
  • Teach or help coordinate an elective class
  • Build effective relationships amongst teachers, parents, and the community to improve school culture
  • Foster a school climate that supports the school’s mission statement; promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents
