The Teacher Aide supports classroom instruction and student activities in regular education and special education settings. Aides may work one-to-one or with small groups to reinforce instruction from a classroom or special education teacher, and may be assigned to life skills classrooms, job coaching, or work with students with special needs. Duties may include cafeteria monitoring, assistance with communication devices, toileting, and personal care. Lifting may be involved. The role relieves teachers of duties related to the teaching process that can be performed by noncertified personnel. The aide is expected to have some knowledge of the assigned area of instruction, exercise good judgment, and work effectively with children. The position is not intended to replace clerical roles or to assist teachers in the teaching process reserved for Teaching Assistants. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a teacher or school principal. The aide may perform other tasks and responsibilities as directed by the Superintendent of Schools or their designee. This is a 10-month-per-school-year assignment scheduled for 30 hours per week, six hours per day. Initial assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
