About The Position

This is a part-time Teacher Aide position at Southlawn School, working 5.75 hours per day, Monday through Friday, for a 10-month school year. The assignment includes a 1:1 student supervision role. Teacher Aides perform non-instructional duties under supervision, assisting teaching staff with various monitoring and clerical tasks. The role involves supporting student growth academically, socially, and emotionally, and maintaining effective communication with colleagues, district leadership, and families. Responsibilities include preparing scripts, assisting with language/computer labs, providing physical and health-related care, supporting students with behavioral needs, assisting with lab setups and experiments, preparing media programs, reading to children, proctoring exams, correcting test papers, maintaining records, and supervising students in various school settings.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.
  • One (1) year of full-time or its part-time paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR
  • One (1) year of full-time or its part-time paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR
  • Possession of a certificate of completion of a course of Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross or similar agency; OR
  • A combination of experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.
  • Successful New York State fingerprint clearance.
  • Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate capacity to meet transportation needs of the job.
  • Clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required for positions involving direct contact with students.

Responsibilities

  • Perform non-instructional duties under supervision determined by the local school district in accordance with Civil Service Law.
  • Prepare scripts for recording purposes.
  • Assist in oversight and technical operations of language and/or computer laboratories.
  • Assist in physical care tasks and health-related activities as appropriate.
  • Assist students with behavioral/management needs.
  • Assist in the setup of laboratory equipment, conduct experiments, and perform limited reviews of student laboratory reports.
  • Assist in the technical preparation and production of media programs.
  • Read to and play audio-visual materials for children in lower grades.
  • Assist in proctoring and other tasks related to the administration of examinations.
  • Assist in the correction of test papers, recording of grades, maintaining of files and preparing statistical reports.
  • Manage records, materials and equipment.
  • Supervise students.
  • Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to be productive citizens.
  • Continually support student growth academically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, district leadership and families to create a classroom culture that supports high expectations for student learning.
  • Provide regular and effective communication with families to support home/school connections.
  • Abide by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Act as a mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, fights, substance abuse etc.
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student data and information.
  • Assist students with academic assignments.
  • Assist students with their project research, encyclopedia skills, card catalogue skills, computer skills, etc.
  • Correct papers.
  • Perform simple and routine clerical duties such as copying or duplicating, filing and compiling attendance sheets.
  • Maintain inventory of and schedule repairs for classroom equipment (such as film strips, cassettes).
  • Supervise lunchroom, study halls, and/or hallways (designated spot in hallway).
