About The Position

The Alberta Public Service (APS) is taking a One Finance approach to the delivery of financial services. Financial services include the delivery of financial planning, reporting and operations, as well as ongoing engagement with policy and program areas to provide strategic decision-making support. The Tax and Revenue Administration Division/Revenue Operations Branch is looking for a two permanent and one temporary full-time Tax Officers to join their team! Reporting to the Senior Manager Corporate Income Tax, the Tax Officer performs tax administration processes for the Corporate Income Tax program in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures resulting in fair and equitable treatment. As a Tax Officer, you will evaluate information, interpret legislation, investigate problems and resolve issues as part of processing tax returns. Some cases can be complex and will require strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills. You will be a member of a processing group and expected to participate actively in fostering the team culture along with meeting the team production goals. We welcome individuals who are client focused, adept in interpreting legislation, keen in applying their accounting skills and have a positive attitude along with good teamwork skills.

Requirements

  • University graduation in a related field plus 3 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
  • Related diploma plus 5 years directly related experience
  • Accounting designation and 1-year additional related experience
  • Well developed analytical and conceptual skills to identify and resolve related problems
  • Ability to interpret supporting documentation including financial statements and make decisions
  • Knowledge of risk criteria and the ability to apply per defined procedures
  • Ability to interpret/apply legislation
  • Strong analytical and reconciliation skills
  • Knowledge and experience of tax, interest and penalty calculations
  • Familiarity with the general responsibilities of other tax or business-related agencies various consumer assistance and registry services
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Corporate Income Tax, tax administration processes, processing systems and rules
  • Knowledge of industry conditions and trends
  • Knowledge of the Government of Alberta's applicable legislations

Responsibilities

  • Performs reviews of medium risk issues as identified by the risk management processes in Tax Revenue Administration (TRA), including recommendations for improvement to tax legislation, and client procedures and policies.
  • Conducts investigative analysis and due diligence to ensure accurate assessments and reassessments. Confirm eligibility of claimant for the refund in accordance with conditions specified in legislation, policies, and because of technical interpretations.
  • Communicates finding and decisions both orally and written with clients in a clear and timely manner.
  • Reviews medium and high risk returns of Corporate Income Tax assessments and reassessments to ensure compliance of specified legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Performs audits and reviews of medium risk issues as identified by the risk management processes in TRA including recommendations for improvement to tax legislation and client procedures and policies.
  • Assist in the development of new systems by participating in the creation of user requirement documents and testing system change requests.
  • Documents findings and conversations based on sufficient and appropriate evidence to support decision making.
