About The Position

The Tax Manager is responsible for the preparation, review, and coordination of federal and state tax compliance for a portfolio of real estate partnerships, corporations, and individual investors. This role serves as a technical tax resource for the organization, providing guidance on partnership taxation, tax planning, and complex real estate transactions while maintaining direct involvement in tax return preparation and compliance activities. The Tax Manager works closely with the Vice President of Tax, outside CPA firms, legal counsel, internal accounting teams, and investors to ensure accurate reporting, compliance, and effective tax strategy execution.

Requirements

  • 6–10 years of progressive tax experience, including significant experience with real estate partnerships, pass-through entities, and individual taxation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of partnership taxation, basis calculations, allocations, and real estate tax structures.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing complex federal, state, and multi-state tax returns.
  • Strong understanding of tax planning strategies related to real estate transactions and ownership structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and resolve complex tax issues independently.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and tax preparation software.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with executive leadership, investors, external advisors, and all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated initiative, professionalism, sound judgment, and confident decision-making skills.
  • Strong mentoring and team development capabilities with a hands-on management approach.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review complex federal, state, multi-state, and franchise tax returns, extensions, tax elections, and estimated tax payments for partnerships, LLCs, S corporations, C corporations, and individual investors.
  • Prepare and review tax projections, analyses, and planning scenarios for executive leadership, investors, and business partners.
  • Analyze and review partnership allocations, capital accounts, tax basis calculations, Section 704(b) allocations, and investor reporting.
  • Provide technical tax guidance and research related to acquisitions, dispositions, refinancings, restructurings, tax credit investments, and other real estate transactions.
  • Research, analyze, and resolve complex tax issues, notices, examinations, and inquiries from federal, state, and local taxing authorities.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with outside CPA firms, legal counsel, tax advisors, tax credit investors, and taxing authorities regarding tax compliance, audits, and transactional matters.
  • Assemble, review, and coordinate financial information and supporting documentation for tax audits and governmental examinations.
  • Review tax-related journal entries and ensure proper accounting treatment for flow-through investments and tax-related transactions.
  • Review partnership agreements, ownership structures, and transaction documents to determine tax reporting implications and identify potential tax risks and planning opportunities.
  • Develop and enhance tax compliance processes, procedures, and internal controls to improve efficiency and reduce risk.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior tax accountants while serving as a resource to the broader organization.
  • Ensure the timely preparation, distribution, and retention of tax returns, K-1s, investor reporting, and related electronic records.
  • Participate in strategic tax planning initiatives and special projects as assigned.
