About The Position

The Digital Assets Tax Manager assists in providing tax compliance & consulting services to clients in the digital assets space, including lab companies, NFT creators, stablecoins, infrastructure companies (mining and staking), exchanges, fintech companies, and corporations engaging with crypto/blockchain solutions. This role involves applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and changes in tax policy, and contributing to marketing, networking, and business development. The manager may also be asked to provide written tax advice to clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.
  • Prior supervisory experience, required.
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
  • Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills as well as decision-making skills.
  • Capacity to work well in a team environment.
  • Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
  • Ability to compose written tax advice.
  • Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred.
  • Blockchain and Cryptocurrency industry experience supporting lab companies, NFT creators, stablecoins, infrastructure companies that do mining and staking, exchanges, fintech companies, and corporations engaging with crypto/blockchain solutions, preferred.
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat, preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases, preferred.
  • Proficient in tax compliance process software, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
  • Ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
  • Applies understanding of client’s unique circumstances and documentation to prepare required filings (tax returns) using a system of review and documentation.
  • Ensures all data needed to comply with filing requirements are collected.
  • Identifies and properly communicates missing items to prepare returns.
  • Utilizes Firm compliance software to maximize efficiency in tax preparation.
  • Collaborates with Principals, Tax Seniors, and Associates on project completion.
  • Delivers high quality federal, state, and international tax compliance services.
  • Leads complex engagements with a team of tax professionals.
  • Manages the engagement including billing, collections, and budget for projects.
  • Builds and manages client relationships.
  • Ensures/Documents client work and conclusions in the client tax file.
  • Identifies when research is needed, frames issues for research, and reports the analysis.
  • Applies Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
  • Involves firm specialists, as appropriate.
  • Assists with identifying, developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective tax strategies.
  • Leads clients with legal entity structuring, token genesis events, deal analysis, revenue recognition, sourcing, and implementation of clients’ tax objectives.
  • Prepares and leads client meetings on advisory and compliance projects related to tax planning opportunities and the tax implications of various transactions.
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation.
  • May be required to organize and conduct effective internal CPE training sessions in area of specialization.
  • Supervises Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
  • Reviews work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provides review comments.
  • Trains Associates and Seniors on software tools.
  • Acts as a Career Advisor to Associates and Senior Associates.
  • Schedules and manages workload of Associates and Senior Associates.
  • Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Associates and Senior Associates.
