Tax Examining Technician (Closing Technician)

About The Position

This position is within the Small Business Self Employed (SBSE) business unit, specifically in the Campus Exam/AUR Cincinnati area. The role involves receiving, reviewing, and establishing Innocent Spouse claims in applicable inventory and case management systems. Technicians will utilize various IRS systems such as Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), Enterprise Case Management (ECM), Document Upload Tool (DUT), and Ephesoft to control, route, and process incoming claims. Key duties include verifying required documentation, performing initial case processing actions, updating case controls, and maintaining accurate inventory records throughout the claim lifecycle. Additionally, technicians will complete taxpayer notifications based on determinations made by higher-graded technicians, update tracking systems, monitor suspense inventories, and follow up on taxpayer responses.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service.
  • Specialized experience includes performing a variety of miscellaneous tasks involving researching and processing financial documents, reviewing information, and determining corrective action on accounts.
  • Specialized experience includes researching for missing/unclear accounting information to make appropriate adjustments.
  • Specialized experience includes reviewing and processing taxpayer account information per organizational guidelines (e.g., Internal Revenue Code (IRC), Internal Revenue Manual (IRM), and Audit Information Management Systems (AIMS)) and maintaining current knowledge of tax law and internal processing procedures.
  • Specialized experience includes identifying account discrepancies and applying tax laws to correct account issues.
  • Specialized experience includes providing information at the request of taxpayers, taxpayer representatives, and third parties through telephone, written, and digital communication, including automated systems to generate notices and taxpayer correspondence.
  • Must have completed at least 90 days of federal civilian service since their latest non-temporary appointment from a competitive referral certificate (Time After Competitive Appointment - TACA).

Nice To Haves

  • Four (4) years of education above high school in any related field of study from an accredited college or university (as an alternative to specialized experience).
