About The Position

This Tax Examiner 2 position is for the Department of Taxation Revenue/Compliance Division/Call Center in Reno. The Tax Examiners are responsible for assisting Taxpayers to resolve account issues and to answer taxability questions over the telephone. The Call Center's function is to answer phone calls from Taxpayers requesting assistance or guidance regarding their accounts or to answer general questions. The main purpose of the Tax Examiner is to quickly and accurately answer these questions or determine who may best answer the question and process the call as trained. There is a broad range of areas that the sales/use Tax Examiners are required to be knowledgeable in. The areas include, but are not limited to: sales and use tax questions, modified business tax, commerce tax, and to have basic knowledge of the Excise tax types. Your work day is based on the amount of incoming calls the call center receives. The range can be anywhere from 20 - 60 calls per day. The Call Center's operating hours are 7:30am - 5:00pm Monday thru Friday. Newest employees to the call center will be required to work an 8 hour shift ending at 5:00pm Tax Examiners are responsible for licensing/registration, collecting taxes and fees, and assisting taxpayers to ensure compliance with the applicable tax and registration statutes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year experience in bookkeeping, collections, or the interpretation and application of policies, regulations and/or legal requirements equivalent to an Administrative Assistant III or Accounting Assistant III in Nevada State service; OR Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as stated above; OR one year experience as a Tax Examiner I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of standard bookkeeping methods in order to properly debit and credit accounts.
  • Working knowledge of payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
  • Working knowledge of computer spreadsheet techniques sufficient to record, track, manipulate and report data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, implement and monitor clerical accounting methods and procedures.
  • Ability to respond orally and in writing to diverse and complex inquiries regarding accounts related matters.
  • Skill in mathematical computations sufficient to calculate taxes and penalties and ensure the proper balance of accounts.
  • Skill in operating a computer terminal to maintain accounts.
  • Skill in using a ten key calculator by touch.

Responsibilities

  • Process tax returns; examine data for accuracy; calculate tax, penalty and interest if applicable; collect appropriate payment and post to taxpayer account.
  • Process applications for business licenses; examine applications to verify completeness; input information into system; research files to determine previous history; and issue licenses or one-time permits as appropriate.
  • Assist applicants and taxpayers with completing forms and submitting required documentation; provide information related to federal and State regulations and pertinent tax statute(s).
  • Maintain files by updating data to reflect name and address changes, closing of accounts, and other information.
  • Reconcile receipts, monies collected and corresponding documents within each category to ensure proper distribution to accounts; prepare bank deposits and required reports.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
