About The Position

The Tax Examiner 1 role with the Department of Revenue offers a great chance to grow your skills while serving the public. You will join a supportive team that helps taxpayers and ensures tax processes run smoothly. This position provides a great deal of technical tax knowledge and experience that will enable you to conduct research and examine individual tax returns. This role supports the careful review and handling of individual tax returns, payments, and related information. You will help ensure accuracy, proper processing, and timely response to taxpayer inquiries.

Requirements

  • Two years of general office work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment, including a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.

Responsibilities

  • Examine individual tax returns and documents for accuracy and proper application of tax credits
  • Verify mathematical calculations and confirm information is correctly carried to required lines
  • Review responses to tax notices and make necessary adjustments to returns
  • Locate misapplied payments in the tax system and apply them to the correct accounts
  • Provide clear verbal and written responses to internal and external inquiries
  • Prepare production reports for completed work that is not automatically tracked by the system
