About The Position

Do you want a role with on-the-job training designed to develop technical knowledge, competence, and skill? Apply to be a Tax Examiner 1 with the Department of Revenue, Bureau of Registration and Taxpayer Management, Taxpayer Registration Division, Tax Specialty Section. This role begins with a six-month formal, informal, and on-the-job training that gives you the chance to lean specialized tax processes, build technical knowledge, and support taxpayers across the Commonwealth. In this Tax Examiner 1 position, you will learn what it takes to review and examine applications, forms, tax returns, schedules, and associated documents and to interpret and explain the Commonwealth’s tax laws, regulations, bulletins, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • Two years of general office work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment.
  • Submit to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.

Responsibilities

  • Navigate myPATH & PATH (Pennsylvania Tax Hub) to help customers use both systems effectively; make changes to keep customer records accurate
  • Answer questions in writing and by phone to explain procedures, requirements, filing, and application outcomes
  • Create, update, and track the processing of registration and tax cases
  • Gather and analyze data from multiple sources to resolve account issues, determine eligibility for sales tax exemptions, and complete related work items
  • Learn to review and interpret legal documents and requirements related to tax exemption eligibility, how businesses are organized, and other tax related matters
