About The Position

As a Tax Examiner 1 with the Department of Revenue, Bureau of Business Taxpayer Accounting Business Tax Payment Refund Division Administrative Review Section, you will take part in essential work that keeps tax systems functioning smoothly. This position allows you to learn how to review payments, assess accounts, and communicate with taxpayers. You will support a mission focused on accuracy, service, and clear understanding of tax requirements. Step into the Tax Examiner 1 role and build a strong foundation for future advancement. This position helps ensure tax returns and payments meet state requirements by reviewing information and supporting taxpayer assistance.

Requirements

  • Two years of general office work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment due to access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and compliance with IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075). This includes criminal history reports, fingerprint-based federal records check, PA State Police clearance, local law enforcement checks, and citizenship/residency verification.

Responsibilities

  • Help taxpayers file taxes through Telefile or myPath and provide information when needed
  • Review, apply, and adjust payments to ensure proper posting on accounts
  • Examine correspondence, assessment responses, and returns to determine accuracy and required action
  • Transfer credits or payments to correct accounts or periods when errors are identified
  • Calculate penalties, interest, and payoff figures using spreadsheets or calculators
  • Contact taxpayers by phone or in writing to verify information and explain policies and procedures
