About The Position

The Tax Examiner 1 position with the Department of Revenue offers a great opportunity to build skills in reviewing and processing tax returns. This role allows you to learn important procedures that support accurate tax administration across the Commonwealth. You will grow your knowledge each day while helping ensure fair and consistent application of tax laws. Join the Department of Revenue as a Tax Examiner 1 and start developing a strong foundation in tax review work. This position supports the examination and processing of individual tax returns to ensure they meet state requirements.

Requirements

  • Two years of general office work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment due to access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and IRS Publication 1075 requirements.
  • Acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to examine and adjust individual tax returns for accuracy
  • Review legal tax documents and supporting materials included with returns
  • Prepare and send documentation requesting details needed to complete return processing
  • Verify mathematical accuracy and ensure correct amounts carry to proper lines
  • Respond verbally and in writing to inquiries regarding return status or adjustments
  • Submit production reports for completed work that is not logged by the computer system
