About The Position

Fresh Mark is looking for an experienced Tax Accountant to join our company. The Tax Controller is a newly created position that aims to strengthen the company's financial leadership and support our continued growth. This role represents a strategic investment in building a more robust, proactive, and compliant tax function across the organization. The Tax Controller will serve as the company’s in-house expert on federal, state, and local tax matters, overseeing all aspects of tax planning, reporting, compliance, and audit management. As a key member of the finance team, the Tax Controller will design and implement tax strategies that align with Fresh Mark’s long-term business objectives, ensure accurate and timely filings, and drive process improvements that enhance efficiency and reduce risk. This position offers the unique opportunity to build and shape the company's tax function, collaborate closely with cross functional teams, and contribute directly to Fresh Mark’s financial success. Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in tax management, ideally within a public accounting firm or corporate tax department.
  • Technical Skills: Extensive knowledge of tax laws (federal, state, local), regulations, and compliance requirements. Proficiency in tax preparation and review software. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
  • Soft Skills Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to effectively explain complex tax concepts. Strong interpersonal skills. Leadership and management abilities. Attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent organizational and time management skills, especially in deadline-driven environments.

Responsibilities

  • Federal, State Income and Franchise Tax Compliance: Oversee the accurate and timely preparation and filing of various corporate tax returns (federal Form 1120 S and IC DISC, state income, state franchise, and state composite returns, and local income tax returns). Work closely with outsourced tax return preparer to ensure information requests are timely supplied and participate in the tax return preparation process.
  • Federal, State and Local Indirect Tax Compliance: Work with internal company controllers to oversee the accurate and timely preparation and filing of indirect tax returns (excise, property tax, gross receipts, sales and use, other).
  • Tax Planning and Strategy: Develop and implement effective tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and maximize financial benefits for the company. Work with internal company personnel regarding the tax life assigned to capital expenditures and forecast future tax depreciation deductions Nexus and PTE Review. Evaluate company operating activities for state nexus purposes. For states where returns are required, evaluate the benefits of Pass-Through Entity tax election and implement where applicable.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough tax research on tax issues, interpret tax laws and regulations, and analyze their implications.
  • Income Tax Accounting: Prepare annual income tax provisions for review by external auditors.
  • Client and Stakeholder Management: Maintain strong relationships with company executive leadership, providing tax advice, and responding to inquiries. Communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Tax Notices and Audit Support: Prepare responses to tax notices received from governmental agencies. Represent the company during tax audits by government agencies (IRS, state, etc.), coordinating documentation and responses.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Engage and mentor the company for non-tax professionals regarding tax matters related to their areas of responsibility.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to streamline and improve tax processes and procedures.
  • Basis Updates-Maintain basis of company stock for all company shareholders.
  • Staying Updated: Keep abreast of changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry best practices to ensure compliance and provide up-to-date advice.
