About The Position

First Star Safety is a growing subcontractor specializing in maintenance of traffic, flagging, and pavement marking services. We are dedicated to delivering high-quality results while ensuring the highest standards of compliance, safety, and accountability. With over 50 employees across multiple states, we are looking to strengthen our financial operations and strategic oversight through the addition of a skilled part-time Controller. Position Overview: The Part-Time Controller will oversee all aspects of financial management, reporting, and compliance. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy of financial data, supporting business strategy, and guiding leadership with sound financial insights. Experience with Deltek (accounting software) is essential, and familiarity with the construction industry is a must. This role is ideal for a professional seeking a flexible, part-time schedule while still engaging in strategic and hands-on financial management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3–5 years in a Controller or similar role.
  • Proficiency in Deltek/ CE is required
  • Construction industry experience required, particularly with job costing and project-based accounting.
  • Understanding of all elements of Job Cost, including labor, materials, and overhead
  • Working knowledge of Unions, Prevailing Wage, Certified Payroll, EEO Reporting, Multi-state Payroll Tax, Tax Exemption, Multi-state Sales Tax, OCIP/CCIP, Lien Rights, and Project Funding
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software programs. Advanced Excel skills required including pivot tables and lookups
  • Deltek / CE experience required
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to present financial data clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • High degree of integrity and professionalism with strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a part-time capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and project/job costing.
  • Manage and maintain the company’s Deltek accounting system; ensure accurate reporting and data integrity.
  • Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Provide financial analysis, forecasts, and budgets to support strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations as well as industry-specific compliance requirements.
  • Partner with the President to develop and monitor key financial metrics
  • Work closely with division leaders to ensure accurate job costing, billing, and revenue recognition.
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners as needed.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
