About The Position

Horizon Retail Construction is a nationally recognized general contractor specializing in tenant improvement. We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and driven Tax & Compliance Manager to join the team at our corporate headquarters in Sturtevant, Wisconsin. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in Sales & Use Tax / SALT experience
  • Strong understanding of multistate taxation principles
  • Experience filing returns in numerous jurisdictions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong audit and tax research experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with tax software (e.g. Avalara, Sage or similar platforms) preferred
  • CPA or CPA candidate
  • Experience in public accounting or corporate tax department
  • Knowledge of sales & use tax and indirect tax compliance
  • Familiarity with tax research tools (e.g. Avalara)

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file sales and use tax returns for all required jurisdictions.
  • Manage tax compliance across 50+ states and local taxing authorities.
  • Research and interpret state and local tax regulations.
  • Respond to tax notices and inquiries.
  • Manage state and local tax audits.
  • Maintain tax filing calendar and compliance deadlines.
  • Review exemption certificates and vendor tax documentation.
  • Manage vendor W-9 validation and 1099 Form.
  • Coordinate income and franchise tax payments with external CPA firms.
  • Monitor tax law changes and assess business impacts.
  • Mentor, develop, and coach operating teams on tax impact on projects.
  • Oversee licensing compliance process managed by Licensing Specialist.
  • Review license renewal status and escalation items.
  • Coordinate with bonding companies regarding compliance requirements.
  • Develop and improve compliance tracking procedures.
  • Assist Controller with accounting tasks related to taxes.
  • Support financial statement audits.
  • Prepare tax-related reporting schedules.
  • Credit Risk Management.
