About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Tax, the Tax Analyst plays a critical role in supporting Global Relay’s dynamic tax function. This new role is an excellent opportunity for someone with a base level of knowledge in either corporate tax and/or indirect taxes and has a desire to build and diversify their skill set in both disciplines. As Global Relay continues to grow, the Tax Analyst will play an instrumental role in helping the business scale its increasingly complex corporate and indirect tax obligations and reporting requirements in Canada and abroad. The Tax Analyst will be the first point of contact for internal and external stakeholders to field and resolve tax-related queries.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years in tax experience in an accounting firm and/or industry
  • Candidates are expected to have a foundational understanding of either direct taxes or indirect taxes—experience with both is an asset
  • Familiarity with Canadian, United States, and United Kingdom corporate tax rules is an asset
  • Familiarity with Canadian GST/HST and British Columbia PST rules.
  • Familiarity with the United States sales and use taxes and United Kingdom VAT is an asset
  • Knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (‘ASPE’)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and time-manage
  • Impeccable accuracy with numbers and high attention to detail
  • Expert level Excel proficiency, with advanced knowledge of Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent telephone etiquette and ability to write clear, concise and formal business communications
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion and to be entrusted with confidential information
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a company that provides Software as a Service (‘SaaS’) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of Global Relay’s portfolio of interim and year-end corporate tax provisions for multiple entities in various jurisdictions, including: Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of domestic and international information returns and various corporate franchise taxes throughout the United States
  • Compile and provide corporate tax return information to external consultants and perform a comprehensive review of deliverables therefrom
  • Responsible for driving internal processes related to the Scientific Research & Experimental Development (‘SR&ED’) and Research & Development Expenditure Credit (‘RDEC’) programs, ensuring timely and accurate capturing of information required for such claims
  • Work with the Manager, Tax to record corporate tax expense and related disclosure within Global Relay’s financial statements, book-to-tax analyses, tax account reconciliations, and financial statement recognition and presentation of the SR&ED and RDEC programs
  • Assist the Manager, Tax with compiling documentation for audit queries and information requests
  • Prepare indirect returns such as sales tax, use tax, GST/HST, PST, and VAT returns in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom
  • Work with the Manager, Tax to record all applicable journal entries relating to sales tax, use tax, GST/HST, PST, VAT, and other taxes
  • Assist the Manager, Tax with research of state and local tax legislation and its applicability to service and product offerings in order to conclude on sales taxability
  • Facilitate the collection and retention of all tax documentation related to the taxability of services such as tax residency, exemption certificates, and other artefacts
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all tax related inquiries
  • Research corporate and sales tax implications of growing operations in both current and new jurisdictions, and communicate results of analyses with management
  • Participate in ad hoc tax, accounting, and finance projects, analyses, and initiatives as required
  • Liaise with the Canada Revenue Agency (‘CRA’) and other tax authorities as required
