This role ensures all aspects of the talk show are complete before airing, requiring proactive planning and deadline management for smooth show operation. Key duties include booking and suggesting guests, confirming appearances, daily website postings, understanding the program log, and assembling audio clips for promotions. The producer must promptly notify relevant personnel of any changes or special situations, such as breaking news, cancellations, or technical problems. During the show, the producer ensures smooth operation by adhering to timelines, managing caller requests, relaying important information to talent, keeping the host on track, and interacting with talent, callers, and guests appropriately. This includes running the board flawlessly, handling changes, and monitoring equipment. The producer also screens phone calls during airtime, decides which callers go on air, and must respond effectively in crisis situations. Adaptability to last-minute changes and clear, quick communication with the host, guests, and staff are essential. The role involves assisting with daily commercial production, including voice-overs and copywriting, and developing copy for station and show promos. A working knowledge of radio systems for minor problem-solving is required. The producer assesses emergency situations, makes decisions on contacting management, and may go on-air to report on emergencies. Understanding and articulating station and show programming directions and philosophies is also part of the role.
