About The Position

Performs motor vehicle maintenance and repair work, including maintenance and repairs on motor vehicles, small engines, generators, and related equipment. Repairs and modifies combustion powered light to heavy wheeled vehicles and equipment. Performs general boat maintenance (non-engine repairs), handy-man-type repairs on buildings and training aids, and fabrication of training aids. Operations include daily maintenance, fabrication, training, and field training support. The primary duty is tactical vehicle repair, with secondary duties of facility maintenance and fabrication, and tertiary duties including field training support such as roleplaying in the field, driving vehicles and boats, and generalized support duties.

Requirements

  • Three years’ experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of small engines, and vehicles.
  • Three years’ experience and understanding of basic welding in pertaining to minor and major vessel/vehicular structure repair.
  • Three years of experience working as a vehicle mechanic.
  • Experience or training in personal protection equipment (PPE) required under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with watercraft is desired.
  • Desired to have experience safely operating tactical vehicles.
  • Experience with USAF PMEL and HAZMAT handling requirements is desired.
  • Possess a High School Diploma, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory and maintain maritime-related equipment.
  • Maintain and repair unit-assigned tactical vehicles, including major and minor repairs.
  • Check with Polaris every six months for any technical service bulletins.
  • Maintain Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) Certification for off-road driving as an instructor and instruct two classes per year.
  • Review ROHVA training plans and complete training within 120 days of in-processing.
  • Tailor ROHVA training plan to suit the needs of the 351st SWTS.
  • Provide support at Kirtland AFB and other designated training locations within CONUS or OCONUS.
  • Schedule and complete routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs to ensure tactical vehicles are available for training events.
  • Forecast supplies, equipment, and future logistical requirements for tactical vehicle fleet, unit-assigned boats, and handy-man activities or fabrication.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and mechanical equipment if repairs cannot be completed on-site.
  • Repair and schedule maintenance of systems including diesel, gasoline and other types of internal combustion engines.
  • Repair basic issues associated with Manual, Automatic and CVT transmissions.
  • Identify issues and conditions that require specialized repairs and coordinate/schedule these repairs.
  • Utilize visual and auditory checks and test equipment to determine the exact nature or extent of repair or adjustment necessary.
  • Remove and disassemble engines and/or assemblies, sub-assemblies, components and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems.
  • Check and repair electrical and cooling systems.
  • Fabricate custom requirements to tactical vehicle fleet including paint, weapons, mounts, and related items.
  • Inspect, inflate, and change wheels and tires and use machines to mount new tires onto wheels.
  • Perform oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, and other scheduled maintenance.
  • Test motors and engines for satisfactory performance.
  • Install after-market accessories and equipment.
  • Maintain records of work performed and parts used.
  • Use on-board or hand-held electronic diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoot equipment by servicing and making repairs including removing and replacing new or rebuilt assemblies.
  • Remove and clean fuel tank and spark plugs and adjust tappets.
  • Change and adjust distributors and similar work.
  • Perform other preventive maintenance operations as required.
  • Repair, transport, and assist in the field use of inflatable vehicle decoys for training support.
  • Perform general, non-engine boat maintenance and repairs.
  • Be willing to become boat master qualified to support training operations.
  • Schedule and complete routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs as necessary to ensure required watercraft are available for training events.
  • Advise Commander or Unit Logistics office of major repairs and overhauls that need to be accomplished by a manufacturer’s authorized service facility or equivalent and if the watercraft or engine needs to be replaced.
  • Maintain and provide inputs to improve or update Government Furnished Publications including regulations, publications, and directives required by MAJCOMs, NAVSEA, and NAVSAFECEN pertaining to waterborne operations.
  • Maintain the Maritime and Vehicles MSDS and HAZMAT programs.
  • Comply with company standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
