About The Position

Burns Engineering is seeking a high-energy, bright, collaborative Systems Engineering Intern for Summer 2027. Burns provides professional engineering design and project management services for transportation, facilities, and infrastructure projects, with capabilities across mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, transportation, and energy consulting engineering. Under supervision, the intern will assist with project design and learn the firm’s technical policies, procedures, and standards. The role includes coordination with other design disciplines, exposure to engineering studies and design analyses, and opportunities to accompany senior staff on construction-site inspections. The intern will also learn to communicate design requirements with contractors and equipment suppliers and participate in relevant professional organizations.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to learn the basics of design and analyses within the relevant discipline and grow within the firm.
• Coursework in a four-year undergraduate engineering program.

Nice To Haves

• 0–2 years of internship experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Learn company technical policies, procedures, and standards while working on client projects.
• Assist with design processes on assigned projects under supervision and seek assistance from senior technical staff when needed.
• Help coordinate project designs with other disciplines.
• Observe and learn how engineering studies and design analyses are performed.
• Accompany senior technical staff on construction-site inspections and learn to communicate design requirements to contractors and equipment suppliers.
• Participate in professional organizations to help enhance the firm’s technical reputation and image.
