Systems Engineering Co-Op / Summer Intern

SMS group USA•Pittsburgh, PA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Systems Engineering Co-Op / Internship Program provides students with hands-on experience developing, testing, and supporting industrial Level-2 Automation Systems used in modern steel and metals production facilities. Participants work alongside experienced engineers and gain exposure to software engineering, process technology, data analysis, industrial communications, system integration, testing, commissioning support, and technical documentation. Assignments are tailored to the student's background, capabilities, development objectives, and active project needs. The program is designed to provide a broad engineering foundation before specialization and may serve as an entry path to future full-time engineering opportunities within the Level-2 Engineering organization. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, paid hourly, and on-site at North Shore in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Participants may work with C#, .NET, Visual Studio, Git, MS SQL Server, SQL, Grafana, Metabase, TCP/IP protocols, OPC DA/UA, Level-1 and Level-2 integration, industrial automation architectures, and AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code. Learning opportunities may include industrial software and systems engineering, process technology, advanced process-control systems, Factory Acceptance Testing, commissioning preparation and startup support, industrial communications and system integration, process-data analysis and visualization, customer-facing engineering activities, and real-world project execution. SMS group is a supplier and service partner to the metals industry, providing equipment, maintenance, and spare-part services across metals production, continuous casting and rolling, tubes, welded pipes, forging, non-ferrous technology, and heat-treatment plants. SMS group Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a drug screen and physical capacity profile test.
