Systems Engineer (mft/axway)

TMX GroupToronto, ON
CA$100,000 - CA$110,000Hybrid

About The Position

As a Systems Engineer, you will be a pivotal member of our team, primarily responsible for the management, operations, and ongoing optimization of our Axway Managed File Transfer (MFT) service. This role is critical in ensuring the secure, reliable, and efficient transfer of data across our enterprise and with external partners. Furthermore, as we embark on a strategic initiative to containerize and migrate our MFT services to Kubernetes, you will champion Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and GitOps principles, leveraging tools like OpenShift and Git for version control, collaborative development, and automated deployments, playing a key role in this transformative journey.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design, implementation, and operation of Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions, preferably within a large enterprise environment with complex MFT requirements.
  • Strong, hands-on experience with MFT products like Axway SecureTransport, alongside proficiency in protocols such as SFTP, FTPS, HTTPS, AS2, etc.
  • Solid understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, Firewall rules) and their impact on MFT, with deep experience in Linux/Unix operating systems.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation, coupled with a demonstrable understanding of containerization concepts (Docker) and a working knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Understanding and practical application of Git principles for version control, along with exposure to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts and tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Splunk, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions to stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a large enterprise environment with complex MFT requirements.
  • Experience with other MFT platforms (e.g., IBM Sterling B2B Integrator, GoAnywhere MFT, GlobalSCAPE EFT).
  • Direct experience implementing GitOps workflows (e.g., with Argo CD, Flux CD) and familiarity with OpenShift.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud-native MFT deployments.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD) for MFT deployments.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Kubernetes Certified Administrator - CKA, Docker Certified Associate - DCA, Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration).
  • Experience with virtualization (VMWare, RHV).

Responsibilities

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain the Axway Managed File Transfer suite (e.g., Axway SecureTransport), ensuring high availability, performance, and security.
  • Configure and manage MFT flows, protocols (SFTP, FTPS, HTTPS, AS2, etc.), users, and certificates.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve MFT-related issues, including connectivity problems, file transfer failures, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Perform routine system health checks, patch management, and upgrades for Axway MFT components.
  • Develop and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and procedures for MFT services.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide 24/7 support for critical MFT incidents.
  • Design, develop, and implement new MFT solutions and integrations based on business requirements.
  • Automate MFT processes and tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) or MFT-specific tools.
  • Collaborate with application, security, and infrastructure teams to onboard new MFT users and define transfer requirements.
  • Actively participate in the planning, design, and execution phases of migrating Axway MFT services to a Kubernetes containerized environment.
  • Contribute to the development of Dockerfiles, Kubernetes manifests (Deployments, Services, Ingress, etc.), and Helm charts for MFT applications.
  • Apply IaC principles to define and manage MFT infrastructure and configurations.
  • Implement GitOps workflows for continuous deployment and reconciliation of MFT services, using Git as the single source of truth.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot MFT applications running within Kubernetes clusters while staying current with emerging trends in containerization, Kubernetes, IaC, and GitOps.
  • Ensure all MFT activities adhere to security policies, compliance regulations (e.g., FIPS, GDPR, HIPAA), security benchmarks (CIS), and industry best practices.
  • Implement and maintain secure configurations for MFT systems and participate in security audits to provide evidence of MFT controls.
  • Identify, analyze, and implement performance improvements for MFT services by evaluating logs and metrics to proactively address potential issues.
