Systems Engineer - Senior (Tactical Communication ICT)

Modern Technology Solutions Inc•Bath Township, OH

About The Position

MTSI is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer with deep expertise in tactical communications systems to support AFLCMC/WA activities for advanced warfighting capabilities. The engineer will provide technical leadership in developing, integrating, and assessing secure, resilient, multi-band, networked communications architectures for next-generation Air Force platforms and system-of-systems constructs. Work includes tactical datalinks; line-of-sight (LOS) and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) communications; waveform development; anti-jam and low probability of intercept/low probability of detection (LPI/LPD) communications; networking standards; and cross-platform interoperability. The role spans organizational boundaries and security levels to deliver integrated communications-enabled capabilities for future Air Force missions. The engineer will assess and validate communications architectures for fighter aircraft, advanced platforms, autonomous systems, and mission networking environments. The role also includes reviewing contractor technical artifacts and subsystem designs, translating operational needs into requirements and acquisition documentation, coordinating engineering reviews and test planning, and briefing senior acquisition leaders and DoD decision-makers on technical risks, trade-offs, recommendations, and international impacts. The engineer will coordinate with U.S. and allied engineering organizations and support classified and multi-level engineering environments.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working in a DoW program or product acquisition office or environment.
  • At least three years of experience in a Special Access Program (SAP) and/or Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) environment within the last five years.
  • Strong technical background in tactical datalinks such as Link-16, MADL, TTNT, or similar.
  • Strong technical background in LOS/BLOS communications.
  • Strong technical background in secure waveforms, COMSEC, encryption, and information assurance.
  • Strong technical background in network architectures for airborne or distributed systems.
  • Ability to synthesize complex communications engineering information into concise, decision-ready summaries and executive products.
  • Proven ability to work across government, industry, organizational, and functional boundaries and multi-level security environments.
  • Ability to analyze and communicate technical impacts of capability release, alternative architectures, or downgraded configurations.
  • Experience coordinating and leading technical teams to successful completion of tasks.
  • Master of Science (MS), Master of Arts (MA), or higher in a relevant engineering discipline; alternatively, a relevant engineering bachelor's degree plus an MS/MA or higher or equivalent professional degree; or a relevant engineering bachelor's degree plus 15 years of engineering experience with the DoD, another government agency, or a DoD contractor.
  • An engineering technology degree does not meet the stated education requirement.
  • Active DoD Top Secret (TS) security clearance with the ability to obtain SCI.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to contract requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Guide systems engineering for tactical communications systems, including waveform performance analysis, network architecture design, link budget assessments, and system-of-systems integration.
  • Assess, develop, and validate communications architectures for fighter aircraft, advanced platforms, autonomous systems, and mission networking environments.
  • Evaluate tactical datalinks, including Link-16, MADL, advanced waveforms, secure voice and data systems, and emerging tactical networking standards.
  • Assess communications resilience, including anti-jam techniques, LPI/LPD techniques, encryption, spectrum considerations, and performance in contested environments.
  • Translate operational mission needs into communications system requirements, interface definitions, integration strategies, and acquisition documentation.
  • Review contractor technical artifacts, interface documents, integration plans, and communications subsystem designs for feasibility, interoperability, and mission alignment.
  • Prepare and deliver technical and executive-level briefings to senior acquisition leaders and DoD decision-makers on performance trade-offs, technical risks, architectural recommendations, and international impacts.
  • Facilitate and coordinate cross-functional teams conducting communications engineering reviews, test planning, and milestone activities.
  • Support engineering activities across multiple security levels, including classified communications architectures and secure network environments.
  • Translate multi-platform operational partner needs into common engineering requirements, integration strategies, and acquisition documentation.
  • Coordinate with U.S. and allied engineering organizations to support interoperability, data exchange, configuration alignment, and common architecture frameworks.
  • Perform analyses across mission, system, and subsystem levels in classified and multi-level engineering environments.
