Systems Engineer: Mission Modeling Simulation – Level 3 or 4 (AHT)

Northrop Grumman•Chandler, AZ
•$98,400 - $184,200•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is seeking a Systems Engineer to support mission-level and system-level modeling, simulation, and analysis for advanced missile and interceptor systems. The role supports complex architecture and simulation frameworks, mission engineering and operations analysis, and trade studies that inform system architectures, requirements, and concepts of operation. The engineer will contribute technically, collaborate across disciplines, and engage with program and customer leadership. The position is 100% on site in Chandler, Arizona, and includes travel 10% of the time. The engineer will work with systems, GNC, seeker/sensor, software, mission, and integration and test engineers to develop and integrate performance models, algorithms, and simulations; perform operations and behavior analysis and mission-effectiveness studies; assess architecture alternatives and end-to-end engagement and campaign-level effectiveness; and use graphical interfaces and visualization tools. The role also connects operational mission needs and analysis findings to requirements, engineering analyses, performance metrics, test strategies, documentation, specifications, and reviews, and presents analysis-backed recommendations affecting architecture trades, CONOPS, and TTPs. The role may be filled at Level 3 or Level 4.

Requirements

  • Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of professional experience in systems engineering or modeling and simulation; alternatively, a master’s degree and 3 years, or a Ph.D. and 1 year.
  • Level 4: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 8 years of professional experience in systems engineering or modeling and simulation; alternatively, a master’s degree and 6 years, or a Ph.D. and 4 years.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting mission-level and system-level modeling and simulation for missile/interceptor or integrated air and missile defense programs.
  • Hands-on experience with operations analysis and virtual simulation tools such as AFSIM, NGTS, Brawler, STK, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar environments.
  • Strong background in probability, statistics, and design of experiments applied to weapon-system and mission performance.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting technical teams, defining MS&A plans, and reviewing or approving models, assumptions, and analysis results.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret and/or Special Access Program access; active TS/SAP is highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including briefing complex analysis outcomes to program and customer leadership.
  • Ability to drive tasks to completion independently and collaboratively, with strong mentoring and training skills.
  • Experience with missile/interceptor GNC and tracking/estimation, including Kalman filtering, particle filtering, or optimal estimation theory.
  • Experience with RF or EO/IR seeker/sensor modeling.
  • Experience with integrated air defense systems or threat modeling.
  • Experience with electronic attack, electronic protection, and countermeasures modeling.
  • Experience with survivability, lethality, and vulnerability analysis at the weapon or mission level.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering and digital engineering, integrating MS&A into system architecture and requirements flow-down.
  • Experience defining TTPs and CONOPS using mission-level simulations and kill-chain analysis.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or similar languages for algorithm development, model integration, scripting, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve MS&A tools, visualization frameworks, and data-analysis workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate mission-level and system-level performance models, algorithms, and simulations of missiles, interceptors, sensors, threats, and command-and-control systems.
  • Perform operations and behavior analysis, mission-effectiveness studies, and assessments of architecture alternatives for delivering effects or capabilities within broader campaigns.
  • Conduct end-to-end engagement and campaign-level assessments.
  • Integrate and use graphical user interfaces and visualization tools.
  • Connect operational mission needs and analysis results to system and subsystem requirements, engineering analyses, performance metrics, test strategies, documentation and reports, specifications, and reviews.
  • Develop and present analysis-backed recommendations that influence architecture trades, concepts of operations, and Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures.
  • Support technical teams, define modeling, simulation, and analysis plans, and review or approve models, assumptions, and analysis results.
