Systems Engineer, Embedded Solutions

ASSA ABLOY•New Haven, CT
•$150,000 - $180,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Systems Engineer is a key contributor to the Systems/Solutions Architect team, supporting the design, integration, validation, and troubleshooting of complex access control systems. The role bridges hardware, firmware, software, manufacturing, and field deployments, with an emphasis on system-level diagnosis, integration issues, and cross-functional collaboration across global teams. The engineer works across customer sites, labs, manufacturing environments, and engineering teams to identify root causes and drive solutions. This is a full-time onsite position in Berlin, CT or New Haven, CT, reporting to the Senior Manager of Embedded Engineering. Travel to customer sites is required as needed.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong background in electronics design, firmware development, or software development, with working knowledge of the other two domains.
  • For an electronics design background: ability to draw schematics and PCB layouts; select components; consider signal integrity and low-voltage power design; and measure EMI/EMC countermeasures.
  • For a firmware development background: hands-on embedded firmware development in C/C++, including reading, modifying, debugging, and occasionally developing firmware features; and a solid understanding of RTOS concepts, including task scheduling, inter-task communication, synchronization primitives, timing constraints, and resource management.
  • For a software development background: strong programming skills with Python or a similar language; experience with API definition and relational database design; and familiarity with SQL query optimization, indexing, data integrity, and debugging.
  • Experience working across the hardware–firmware–application software boundary and understanding how changes in one domain affect overall system behavior.
  • Experience with system integration and system-level debugging.
  • Working knowledge of at least one wired communication protocol, such as TCP/IP or RS-485.
  • Working knowledge of at least one wireless technology, such as Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.15.4, Zigbee, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or NFC.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites as needed.
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of a cybersecurity framework such as NIST.
  • Experience in the Physical Access Control Systems (PACS) industry, including exposure to electronic locks, door controllers, readers, credentials, gateways/hubs, or integrated access control solutions.
  • Familiarity with end-to-end access control system architectures, from field devices through controllers, hubs, and backend software.
  • Experience diagnosing issues in real-world access control deployments, including installation variability, environmental factors, wiring practices, and customer-specific configurations.
  • Understanding of access control protocols and interfaces used in PACS environments, such as OSDP, Wiegand, RS-485, and TCP/IP.
  • Experience with multi-vendor or legacy access control systems and resolving interoperability or integration challenges.
  • Exposure to regulatory, safety, reliability, or security considerations for physical security and access control products.
  • Experience collaborating with field service, manufacturing, quality, and validation teams within an access control or embedded systems product organization.
  • Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer sites as needed and work with OEM teams to diagnose system-level issues.
  • Analyze complex failures spanning hardware, firmware, software, and mechanical domains.
  • Provide findings and recommendations to internal engineering and product teams.
  • Reproduce customer-reported issues in-house through structured testing and analysis.
  • Design and execute system-level test scenarios to isolate root causes and validate fixes.
  • Document findings for engineering, product management, and quality teams.
  • Lead or support integration of multi-component systems, including controllers, readers, hubs, sensors, and software applications.
  • Diagnose and resolve integration issues across wired and wireless interfaces.
  • Evaluate system behavior across edge cases, scale, and real-world deployment conditions.
  • Bridge overseas hardware engineers and firmware developers with local Product Management, Customer Support, Design Validation Testing (DVT), and Automated Test Equipment (ATE) teams.
  • Communicate system-level issues across time zones and disciplines.
  • Support root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Generous holiday schedule, including 13 paid holidays.
  • Paid time off, including sick and vacation days.
  • Job-protected leave benefits in accordance with applicable law.
  • Health and flexible savings accounts, subject to eligibility requirements.
  • Supplemental life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability benefits.
  • Employee pricing on company products and discounts for travel, entertainment, and more.
