Systems Engineer - Linux (12-month contract)

TMX GroupToronto, ON
CA$105 - CA$120Hybrid

About The Position

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the management and support of various infrastructure technologies on distributed system platforms. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain technical solutions based on business requirements and the evaluation of modern information technology trends and practices, utilizing a strong automation, programmatic, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approach to systems management. This role requires an awareness of modern practices like Platform Engineering and how Generative AI tools (such as Copilot and Claude) can augment engineering velocity.

Requirements

  • A post-secondary degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or Engineering, paired with 5+ years of progressive system administration experience.
  • Deep expertise supporting self-hosted physical datacenters alongside RedHat Linux (versions 8, 9, 10).
  • Solid mastery of core networking fundamentals (PXE, DHCP, DNS, LDAP), LVM/XFS storage management, host-based firewall/SSH configurations, and low-level system tuning within high-throughput environments.
  • Proven experience utilizing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks for modernizing enterprise platforms, specifically leveraging Terraform and Ansible Automation Platform.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and virtualization platforms (such as Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and OpenShift Virtualization) and enterprise OS deployment engines (RedHat Satellite).
  • Familiarity with managing on-premise storage environments, including PURE Storage, NetApp, and container-native configurations (Portworx).
  • Practical experience working with centralized monitoring and logging platforms (Splunk Observability/Cloud, Grafana).
  • Conceptual awareness and use of Generative AI productivity tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) to augment code development workflows and daily operations.
  • Excellent analytical, collaborative problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with virtualization platforms like VMWare or Nutanix.
  • Public cloud infrastructure experience, ideally AWS (note: experience in self-hosted datacenters is prioritized).

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain operating systems, application software, and system management tools to ensure high availability and strict adherence to established operational standards.
  • Drive the adoption of an IaC approach by translating business requirements into scalable, programmatic solutions and maintaining system configurations using industry-standard automation tooling.
  • Develop and optimize high-quality code for complex systems tasks, leveraging modern tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) to accelerate engineering velocity and workflow execution.
  • Proactively monitor, identify, and resolve infrastructure resource bottlenecks, performing low-level system performance tuning in high-throughput environments in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Provide advanced 2nd and 3rd level systems support alongside rotational on-call coverage, liaising directly with external vendors and internal technical groups for rapid problem resolution.
  • Author, update, and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, infrastructure design standards, and procedural deployment guides.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging datacenter and infrastructure technologies that directly align with global team objectives.

Benefits

  • Generous time-off and leaves
  • Cloud-first and hybrid workstyle
