Holtec InternationalWinslow Township, NJ
$145,000 - $175,000Onsite

About The Position

The Systems Design Engineer III leads the design, development, and integration of complex systems for the SMR-300 power plant. This role requires extensive coordination with engineering disciplines and licensing groups and technical leadership of system integration activities, including requirements and design-basis development, component specification, engineering analysis, interface management, and resolution of complex design issues. The Engineer exercises a high degree of technical autonomy, establishes approaches for complex engineering assignments, and provides technical direction to other engineers. The Engineer will be part of a team executing a U.S. Government cost-shared development program and will have significant influence on system performance, technical risk, licensing readiness, and successful execution of the plant design.

Requirements

  • BS in an engineering discipline (civil, mechanical, or chemical preferred but not required)
  • Typically 6–10 years of post-graduation engineering experience; an advanced engineering degree may be considered toward relevant experience
  • Advanced knowledge of heat transfer and fluid dynamics fundamentals and their application to complex system design
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex system design, analysis, and integration assignments
  • Demonstrated experience establishing technical approaches and reviewing complex engineering calculations, design documentation, specifications, and design bases
  • Extensive experience developing, managing, verifying, and reconciling system requirements
  • Demonstrated experience resolving complex cross-disciplinary engineering interfaces and technical issues
  • Experience leading technical work scopes, design reviews, or small engineering teams and mentoring less-experienced engineers
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal, presentation, and effective communication skills, including the ability to communicate and defend technical decisions to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel
  • Significant experience working with engineers, manufacturers, and vendors to develop and evaluate designs, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Experience working in the nuclear energy field in a design, engineering, or closely related technical capacity
  • Experience with Smart Plant, MathCad, AutoCAD, Pipe-Flo, Engineering Life-cycle Management (ELM), requirements management software (e.g. DOORS-NG), and HTRI heat exchanger design software
  • EIT and/or PE certification

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and integration of complex plant systems for the SMR-300 small modular reactor program.
  • Lead and review complex engineering evaluations, calculations, and analyses related to thermal-hydraulic, mechanical, and process system design.
  • Establish technical approaches and lead development of system design documentation, including system descriptions, design specifications, engineering calculations, technical reports, and design bases.
  • Lead development, verification, reconciliation, and management of system requirements and design bases, including resolution of conflicting or cross-disciplinary requirements.
  • Lead coordination among component, mechanical, civil, electrical, I&C, licensing, and other engineering organizations to resolve complex system interfaces and ensure integrated plant design.
  • Provide technical leadership for selection, specification, and evaluation of major plant equipment and components.
  • Lead and perform technical reviews of engineering drawings, models, vendor documentation, calculations, and other design deliverables.
  • Identify and resolve complex or ambiguous technical issues with significant system or cross-system implications, developing technically sound and practical solutions with limited oversight.
  • Lead major design reviews, technical meetings, trade studies, and cross-functional engineering activities and communicate technical recommendations and decisions to project and engineering leadership.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, design bases, configuration management requirements, and regulatory expectations.
  • Lead technical support for licensing activities, including development and defense of technical information and resolution of licensing questions affecting assigned systems.
  • Evaluate proposed design changes for system, interface, requirements, licensing, and configuration impacts throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Lead small technical teams or major engineering work scopes and provide technical direction, mentoring, and review to less-experienced engineers.
  • Coordinate technical priorities with project and engineering leadership and proactively identify and communicate significant technical, schedule, integration, and program risks.
  • Serve as a recognized technical resource within assigned systems or areas of expertise and contribute to development of engineering methods, practices, and technical guidance.
