Systems Engineer: Electrical - Level 1 or 2 (AHT)

Northrop Grumman•Chandler, AZ
•$65,800 - $118,900•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Level 1 or Level 2 Systems Engineer focused on electrical systems, based in Chandler, Arizona. This is a 100% onsite role that bridges Systems Engineering and Electrical Design. The engineer applies system-level requirements and electrical design principles to help define electrical architecture, communication flow, and timing, ensuring detailed electrical requirements and interfaces reflect system objectives. The role supports development of electrical architecture, including power distribution, communication buses, and subsystem interfaces. It analyzes communication flows and timing across electrical and data buses, translates system requirements into testable electrical and interface requirements, and maintains traceability among requirements and verification artifacts. The engineer collaborates across Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Avionics, Software, and Integration & Test teams, and supports verification, integration, and test activities. The position may be filled at Level 1 or Level 2. A Secret clearance is not required to start, but the candidate must be able to obtain one; U.S. citizenship is required. Travel is 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available.

Requirements

  • Level 1: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field; no professional experience required.
  • Level 2: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field and 2 years of professional experience, or a Master's degree and no professional experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Demonstrated professional or academic experience with electrical systems engineering, including requirements development and/or architecture or ICD definition.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and author system-level and lower-level electrical requirements and interface documents.
  • Ability to travel; the posting states travel is 10% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with requirements-management tools such as IBM DOORS or equivalent.
  • Experience with spacecraft, launch vehicle, missile, or other complex aerospace electrical/avionics systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical and data bus standards such as LVDS, RS-422/485, MIL-STD-1553, SpaceWire, CAN, or Ethernet.
  • Experience defining and managing electrical interfaces and ICDs across multiple subsystems.
  • Experience with Systems Engineering fundamentals such as requirements management, verification, and design review execution.
  • Experience leading within an IPT organization as a lead or subject matter expert (SME).

Responsibilities

  • Support development and refinement of system electrical architecture, including power distribution, communication buses, and key interfaces.
  • Define and document electrical interfaces between subsystems, ensuring compatibility and compliance with system-level requirements.
  • Participate in trade studies related to electrical architecture, component selection, and interface strategies.
  • Analyze and define communication flows across electrical and data buses, including bandwidth, latency, and timing margins.
  • Coordinate with subsystem owners to align communication timing and data exchange with system performance and mission needs.
  • Identify and mitigate timing, loading, and signal-integrity risks through analysis and coordination with design teams.
  • Translate system-level requirements into clear, testable electrical and interface requirements for subsystems and components.
  • Ensure bidirectional traceability between system requirements, electrical requirements, and verification artifacts.
  • Review requirements and interface control documents (ICDs) for gaps, inconsistencies, or ambiguities, and propose corrective actions.
  • Facilitate communication across Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Avionics, Software, and Integration & Test teams during requirements definition, design, and integration.
  • Support or lead technical interchange meetings, design reviews, and change-control sessions related to electrical architecture and interfaces.
  • Provide electrical systems-focused input to risk, issue, and configuration-management processes.
  • Work with test engineers to confirm electrical implementations satisfy mapped system and subsystem requirements.
  • Contribute to electrical verification plans, test procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support integration and test activities, including hardware bring-up, interface checkout, and end-to-end functional tests.
