Systems Engineer 4

Lam ResearchTualatin, OR
Hybrid

About The Position

In the Global Products Group, we are dedicated to excellence in the design and engineering of Lam’s etch and deposition products. We drive innovation to ensure our cutting-edge solutions are helping to solve the biggest challenges in the semiconductor industry. As a Systems Engineer at Lam, you will design complex frameworks, systems, and products for our wafer fabrication equipment. You’ll define system specifications, requirements, parameters, and compatibility to integrate hardware, software, and firmware into a cohesive system. Your ability to identify, analyze, and resolve system design weaknesses will help shape the next generation of Lam initiatives.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls Engineering (or related field) plus 8+ years experience; or M.S. plus 6+ years; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong background in electrical/mechanical engineering or controls design for large, complex manufacturing systems.
  • Proven ownership of system-level design, integration, and validation.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain complex technical concepts across disciplines.
  • Ability to work with minimal guidance, navigate ambiguity, and drive complex projects to closure.

Nice To Haves

  • System-level technical ownership/integration across mechanical, electrical, software, controls, mechatronics, and process engineering.
  • Define system architecture, requirements, and integration strategy from concept through production.
  • Author/own systems engineering artifacts (e.g., top-level specs/architecture, System Theory of Operation, and Interface Control Documents (ICDs)).
  • Decompose systems into functional subsystems with clear interfaces, error budgets, and design margins; maintain P&IDs, interconnect definitions, and signal lists (port maps).
  • Own system-level validation: approve test plans/results against requirements and produce validation/test reports.
  • Drive DFx (reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, safety, cost) and own/approve system-level FMEA and risk mitigation.
  • Influence and lead without formal authority; drive closure of cross-functional technical actions and decisions.
  • Partner with Program Management and Product/Technical Owners to balance scope, cost, schedule, and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop system and subsystem requirements for deposition tools.
  • Assist in project scope definition and manage system-level risks.
  • Create and execute test plans; analyze and present test data.
  • Identify and resolve technical opportunities and risks across hardware, controls, software, and manufacturing.
  • Manage design tradeoffs and perform hands-on lab work.
  • Design experiments to characterize subsystems and analyze data using Statistical Analysis of Variation and SPC methods.
  • Influence and lead without formal authority, driving closure of cross functional technical actions and decisions.
  • Present technical proposals, test plans, and tradeoff analyses.
  • Deliver results in fast-paced environments.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive set of outstanding benefits
