Systems Engineer 4

Lam ResearchFremont, CA
$119,000 - $261,000Hybrid

About The Position

As a Systems Engineer 4 at Lam, you will lead system definition and cross-functional integration for complex semiconductor equipment, including processing module, and cluster tool architectures. You will serve as a key technical interface between process engineering and multidisciplinary development teams, helping translate product vision into clear requirements, robust architectures, and executable verification strategies. This role requires strong systems thinking, independent technical judgment, and the ability to drive alignment from concept through release.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Proven ability to work across disciplines and integrate inputs from process, mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, facilities, and software teams in the development of complex systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and maintain a Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and use it to guide systems engineering work products, technical reviews, traceability, and verification planning.
  • Strong systems thinking and technical leadership skills, with the ability to translate ambiguous needs into structured requirements, interfaces, architecture decisions, and executable work products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to drive alignment and communicate technical content clearly across functions.
  • Proficiency with standard engineering productivity tools and the ability to produce clear, structured technical documentation in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with semiconductor capital equipment, process modules, vacuum systems, gas delivery, thermal systems, thin film deposition, or related technologies.
  • Experience developing systems engineering artifacts such as requirements, P&IDs, device lists, interconnects, signal lists, interface documents, hazard analyses, interlock definitions, and FMEA.
  • Working knowledge of INCOSE systems engineering practices and familiarity with ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148 for lifecycle and requirements engineering.
  • Experience with architecture trade studies, wafer flow and throughput analysis, productivity analysis, facilities definition, and reliability methods.
  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with modern engineering development environments such as VS Code.
  • Experience with AI-assisted engineering workflows, including GitHub Copilot, foundation LLM models, and retrieval- or agent-based approaches to improve engineering productivity and technical quality.
  • Familiarity with frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph to build reusable skills, assistants, or agents that augment systems engineering work under strong human oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary systems engineering point of contact between process engineering and cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, controls, reliability, manufacturing, facilities, and software engineering.
  • Lead technical scoping and systems engineering planning for new products, technology changes, and subsystem enhancements, including drafting and maintaining a Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP), defining work products, technical reviews, traceability, and verification approach.
  • Translate customer, product, process, safety, and business needs into clear system, controls, and software requirements and functional specifications using INCOSE-aligned systems engineering practices.
  • Develop and maintain system architecture, theory of operation, functional breakdowns, interface definitions, and architecture options for process modules and cluster tools.
  • Drive architecture trade studies, gap and risk analysis, and closure planning to support sound technical decisions and design maturity.
  • Generate and coordinate key systems engineering work products, including system documents, P&IDs, device lists, interconnects, signal lists, SW functional specifications and other interface and integration artifacts.
  • Support cluster tool design through system-level analysis such as wafer flow and throughput modeling, productivity analysis, and facilities definition.
  • Lead or coordinate safety and reliability activities, including hazard analysis, interlock definition, and FMEA.
  • Define test, verification, and validation plans and work across process, hardware, controls, and software teams to ensure requirements are fully verified and validated.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to improve systems engineering methods, documentation quality, and development workflows, including responsible adoption of AI-enabled tools to enhance analysis, knowledge access, and productivity.
  • Use modern engineering tools and AI-assisted workflows, including Python, VS Code, GitHub Copilot, foundation models, and agentic frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph, with strong human oversight and accountability.
