Systems Engineer 1 – Robotics & Automation

Siemens Healthineers
•$85,730 - $117,876

About The Position

Siemens Healthineers is hiring an early-career Systems Engineer 1 to help design, integrate, and validate robotic systems for laboratory diagnostics. The role works with systems, hardware, and software engineers to apply collaborative robotics, sensing, and automation to improve the precision, reliability, and efficiency of laboratory workflows. The engineer contributes across mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines, taking robotic systems from concept toward reliable operation in a regulated medical-device environment. The position focuses on programming and tuning robotic arms, improving accuracy and repeatability, developing motion paths, integrating vision-guided perception and grasping, and using simulation to evaluate robotic behaviors. It also involves designing and prototyping fixtures and end-effectors; integrating robotic subsystems into diagnostic and lab-automation platforms; converting requirements into technical specifications and test plans; analyzing performance data; troubleshooting across disciplines; and contributing to design reviews, risk assessments, and regulated engineering documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in robotics, biomedical, mechanical, electrical, systems, or a related engineering discipline; May 2027 graduation.
  • Hands-on experience programming and integrating robotic arms, including configuration, calibration, and motion planning.
  • Practical experience with ROS2 and integrating robots, sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers such as Arduino into working platforms.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and MATLAB for control, data collection, and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of systems and controls fundamentals and ability to reason about subsystem interactions.
  • Experience with CAD/design tools such as SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, or Autodesk Inventor, and rapid prototyping (3D printing) for fixtures and end-effectors.
  • Familiarity with computer vision / perception for robotics, such as depth sensing, object detection, or OpenCV.
  • Exposure to agentic / AI-assisted programming, including AI coding assistants and agent-based tools for development, prototyping, and automation of engineering tasks.
  • Strong analytical rigor, curiosity, and structured problem-solving; comfort characterizing and improving system performance with data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical results clearly.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and project-coordination experience in academic, research, or extracurricular settings.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robot simulation and modeling environments.
  • Exposure to robot kinematics and control of multi-degree-of-freedom arms.
  • Experience building or orchestrating AI agents / agentic workflows, such as LLM-based copilots or automation agents, to support engineering productivity.
  • Research experience applying engineering or machine-learning methods to biomedical, physiological, or sensor data.
  • Wet-lab or clinical exposure, such as tissue culture or assays, complementing engineering skills.
  • Interest in medical-device development, quality systems, and regulated design processes.

Responsibilities

  • Program, configure, and tune robotic arms to perform precise, repeatable multi-step laboratory workflows.
  • Characterize and improve robot accuracy and repeatability using calibration and measurement techniques.
  • Develop and optimize motion paths and parameters to balance cycle time, reliability, and precision.
  • Integrate vision-guided perception and robust grasping for manipulation in laboratory conditions.
  • Use simulation and modeling tools to prototype and de-risk robotic behaviors before deployment on physical hardware.
  • Design and iterate mechanical fixtures, adapters, and end-effectors for robust robotic handling, including through rapid prototyping.
  • Support system-level design, integration, and verification of robotic subsystems within diagnostic and laboratory-automation platforms.
  • Translate product and process requirements into technical specifications, interface definitions, and structured test plans.
  • Build data-collection and analysis tools to measure robot and process performance, and communicate results to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
  • Contribute to design reviews, risk assessments, and engineering documentation in an FDA / ISO 13485-regulated environment.
