Automation & Robotics Systems Design Engineer

Knight's Armament Company•Titusville, FL

About The Position

The Automation & Robotics Systems Design Engineer supports Knight’s Armament Company by contributing to the design, build, deployment, and documentation of automation and robotic systems intended to improve manufacturing capabilities and product quality. The role designs scopes ranging from subassemblies to complete systems using SolidWorks and creates conceptual renderings, drawings, operating and maintenance manuals, and final documentation packages. The engineer establishes and maintains bills of materials, weight budgets, and project requirements; coordinates prototype and parts manufacturing with the shop and other departments; and develops and conducts tests to validate concepts. The position participates throughout project phases, including concept development, design reviews, implementation, and commissioning, and may manage multiple projects. It also supports implementation teams and trains operators on system functionality and operating criteria, while maintaining the confidentiality of company designs, data, procedures, and processes. The position reports to the Automation & Robotics Manager. The work is performed primarily indoors (98%), with 2% outdoors. Temperature conditions are controlled, with occasional exposure to temperatures in excess of 70 degrees. Physical requirements include seeing, speaking, and hearing; frequent sitting; often standing and walking; and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds. Other activities may include occasional bending, twisting, reaching, fine-finger handling, and kneeling, with rare pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping or crouching, and crawling.

  • At least 5 years of experience designing robotics and automation systems from pre-concept through commissioning.
  • Excellent knowledge of low-power control systems, pneumatic systems, servo and VFD controllers and associated components, electric motors, sensors, instrumentation, and actuators.
  • Excellent knowledge of industrial machinery, safety concerns, and applications.
  • Ability to work with manufacturing and other departments, manage multiple projects, and participate throughout project phases.

Responsibilities

  • Design subassemblies and complete automation and robotics systems using SolidWorks.
  • Create conceptual renderings and design layouts based on qualitative input from management.
  • Create, maintain, and establish bills of materials, weight budgets, and project requirements for subsystem and system components.
  • Manage multiple projects through their life cycles when required and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with the manufacturing shop and other departments to oversee prototype and parts manufacturing and ensure components are available to meet project schedules.
  • Develop and conduct test procedures to validate concepts, and direct and coordinate testing.
  • Produce drawings for concept approvals, design, fabrication, subassemblies, and implementation, as well as final as-built, maintenance, and operating documentation.
  • Participate in concept development, all phases of projects, and design reviews to ensure products meet design objectives and schedule requirements.
