About The Position

UPMC is seeking a full-time Senior Systems Analyst specializing in Epic Beaker. This hybrid position offers the opportunity to support a leading healthcare system and advance within a large Epic organization. The ideal candidate has advanced Epic Beaker expertise, strong analytical and critical-thinking abilities, experience in complex production environments, and proven project leadership and stakeholder communication skills.

Requirements

  • Typically has 5+ years’ experience with modern technology and application support through education or practical experience.

  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of information technology fundamental tools and concepts (SDLC) of one of the information technology professional disciplines and applies that understanding to make independent practical contributions to IT work within a UPMC department or function.
  • Completes on-going training on-the-job, through courses, self-study, certifications and/or advanced degrees to maintain and enhance technical and business capabilities.
  • This position may require participation in the team’s rotating standby schedule, with 24/7 availability during assigned standby periods. Rotation frequency depends on the number of participating team members.
  • Knowledge of laboratory workflows — Demonstrates a strong understanding of clinical and anatomic pathology processes, including specimen collection and processing, testing, result reporting, reference laboratory workflows, and the operational impact of Epic Beaker design decisions.
  • Complex problem-solving and systems analysis — Independently analyzes moderately complex and complex application issues, identifies root causes and cross-system impacts, and develops reliable solutions that support patient care, laboratory operations, data quality, and system performance.
  • Communication, collaboration, and leadership — Communicates clearly with technical and operational stakeholders, leads assigned initiatives, coordinates work across teams and vendors, and mentors less experienced analysts to achieve shared goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level design, build, testing, implementation, maintenance, and optimization support for Epic Beaker Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, and Reference Laboratory functionality. Independently assess moderately complex and complex application needs and deliver reliable solutions.
  • Produce complete, detail-oriented documentation for new and moderately complex application builds, workflows, support procedures, and processes. Maintain responsibility for document quality and validity and elicit and document customer and business requirements for use by application, architecture, engineering, integration, and vendor teams.
  • Independently triage and resolve Level 2 and Level 3 Beaker issues, including high-priority or patient-impacting incidents. Perform root cause and problem management activities as appropriate, coordinate escalations, and mentor less experienced staff in issue investigation and resolution.
  • Take ownership of Beaker projects and initiatives; define scope, requirements, milestones, risks, and dependencies; assign and coordinate tasks among team members; and meet milestone commitments. Maintain accurate project management and time-tracking records.
  • Independently partner with laboratory operations, providers, IT teams, Epic, reference laboratories, and other vendors on technical issues and project initiatives. Serve as the point person for issue escalation when assigned and communicate status, risks, decisions, and recommendations clearly and concisely.
  • Write, analyze, and modify complex operational and application reports. Translate business needs into reporting criteria, use data to support troubleshooting and decisions, act as a business analyst when appropriate, and mentor less experienced team members in reporting and analysis.
  • Create training content and facilitate detailed training sessions for end users, super users, and peers. Share technical knowledge and support consistent adoption of Beaker workflows and team standards.
  • Independently identify opportunities to improve laboratory and application-support processes. Lead improvement efforts and create or update sustainable processes across specimen collection, processing, testing, result reporting, reference laboratory, and support workflows.
  • Identify new functionality and technical requirements associated with Beaker upgrades and implementations. Create test plans; review and validate functionality; report and coordinate resolution of issues; and create or manage cutover, downtime, stabilization, and contingency plans. Evaluate impacts and coordinate work across applications, interfaces, instruments, middleware, reference laboratories, and enterprise platforms.
  • Maintain reference laboratory test compendiums and related build, troubleshoot interface error queues, and resolve order and result-routing issues. Coordinate tasks and resources for integrations among Epic, laboratory instruments, middleware, reference laboratories, and enterprise systems, including validation of end-to-end testing and implementation readiness.
