The purpose of this classification is to administer County information systems and to plan and implement enterprise solutions for an assigned department or agency. The Systems Administrator (Communications/Network) defines requirements, plans, researches, and evaluates the capability of technology systems. They coordinate, configure, install, and maintain information technology systems hardware, software, backup and restore devices, databases, security solutions, and peripheral devices. This role coordinates information and resources to ensure proper and timely installation and maintenance activities, verifies availability and proper operation of products for installation, schedules installations, converts old system data to new systems, tests installed products per agency standards, completes installations and conversions, and provides initial training to customers on new products as needed. The position supports network system access by defining, recommending, implementing, and maintaining enterprise server and workstation components, defining security access levels, setting up accounts for new employees and closing accounts when no longer necessary, increasing account capacity when existing blocks are insufficient for work requirements, establishing port connections for new equipment to the network as needed, resolving network problems per established guidelines, limiting user access to specific areas according to user needs, and documenting procedures and changes on all systems. Additionally, the role performs network administration, configuring, operating, and maintaining programs, databases, and/or infrastructure-related systems, managing and configuring servers to maintain updates, backing up and monitoring event logs, analyzing event logs, identifying potential problems, monitoring the performance and security of programs, databases, and/or infrastructure systems, checking and maintaining connectivity, upgrading servers, adding/deleting computers to/from the network, managing user and email accounts and passwords, monitoring network settings, network software, and drivers, and maintaining databases and a variety of server software. The Systems Administrator provides technical support and training to system users, troubleshooting problems with programs, databases, and/or infrastructure-related systems, resolving problems, escalating problems to vendors or other personnel as appropriate, and ensuring the continual operation of customers’ network applications, utilizing diagnostic tools and other resources as appropriate. The role also supports the development and implementation of new technology by researching and evaluating computer systems, software, and technology issues, developing technology solutions, advising departments on technology business strategies, evaluating departmental information systems and communications requests, and working with vendors to implement new and upgrade existing technology. The position requires maintaining an awareness of new applications, technologies, technical methods, trends, and advances in the profession by reviewing professional publications, technical manuals, and websites to increase knowledge of network operations, and attending conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.
